Re: Is the Trent Severn worth it?

For 5 weeks in June/July with kids, I would take the Trent up and spend some time in southern Georgian Bay while things are warming up further north. Then take a slow cruise up to Killarney and...

Re: Starlink: how to integrate aboard

I used one of these (https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07DMVTHQY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) for 12V->48V and it works well with no noise. I cut the stock cable and plugged into...

Re: Starlink for video

Well the dish is designed and approved for fixed installation. I am sure glad we can still use it on the move. The mast obstruction does not occur very often...maybe it depends on the direction the...

Re: Starlink for video

My wife does a lot of video calls for work and she was not impressed with Starlink. It seems to work well for anything else not as sensitive to signal drops. I suspect the mast will sometimes...

Re: US Coastal Navigation Rules

Cruising license is only available to certain countries of registration and Poland is not on the list. Ref: 19 CFR § 4.94 (b)

Re: Starlink router

I converted my starlink to 12V. It works well and draws about 3A once stabilized. Cost of conversion was approximately CAD$60 including a decent used router.

Re: Starlink Roam issues in the ocean

I have seen exactly the same behaviour on Lake Michigan while heeled about 30 degrees and beating into moderate chop. Starlink in the same location on davits. Stow/unstow and powercycling did not...

Re: Lake Michigan/Chicago

Funny I just passed Charlevoix a few hours ago and did not stop as the wind was right to keep going, but will definitely stop on our way back. Will not be very upset if we have to anchor.

Thanks, will check out that area if we have time for a detour.

Re: Tobermory to Parry Sound

Midland is our home port and we cruise that area extensively. Crossing east from Tobermory should be easier as prevailing winds are in your favour. Wingfield Basin is a good stop to wait for weather...

Lake Michigan/Chicago

This summer we decided to take a break from our beautiful home cruising grounds in Georgian Bay and the North Channel, and head for the cities and sandy beaches of Lake Michigan. The plan is for me...

Re: Remote tech work on the Great Lakes

I also work remotely in IT and have been working from my boat extensively around Georgian Bay and North Channel, and previously on Lake Ontario and a bit of Superior. I use 4G/LTE hot spot from my...

Re: Inflatable paddleboards

I keep my two Solstice Bali boards inflated at max psi, sitting in the sun on top of the davits between June and October. Off season they are stored deflated and rolled up in the cockpit locker. They...

Re: Getting started on the lakes: 3 years later

Looking back to our 7 years as boat owners, I think the first few years are the worst in terms of work and the learning curve. It gets easier once you get most of the major planned projects/upgrades...

Re: New rig for a Catalina 36 Mk II

Great plan. If you make it to Georgian Bay and the North Channel, and come across a Beneteau with green top called "Ariella", we would love to have you over for drinks and hear the stories

Re: New rig for a Catalina 36 Mk II

For light summer winds here, I would keep the rig and get a decent asymmetrical, or code 0, or (preferably) both, in addition to the folding prop.

Re: floating mooring rope

Here on Georgian Bay tying to shore is a fact of life. We have been using 1/2' Oletec-12 from Novabraid for many years. It is light, floating, very strong, UV-stable, dries fast and does not abrade...

Re: 30 Foot Great Lake boat Suggestions

I don't really understand this argument. Go as big as you can afford. Sailing smaller boats could be fun but nothing beats size and comfort for spending more time aboard. You might even go cruising!...

Re: Assymetrical Spinnaker for Beneteau 361

I was looking for the same earlier this year to replace my old asymmetrical, and found that new sails made in Asia by reputable lofts are reasonably priced and get good reviews. I was given these...

Re: Going up the Dnieper River

Re: Highfield CL vs UL Dinghy

They must have added the platform recently. My dinghy is 3 years old and does not have it. It could make getting in and out easier, and definitely a good place for the gas tank.

Re: What other sailboats have THIS layout?

We own a 36-ft boat with U-shaped galley and chartered a 45-ft Bavaria with this layout earlier this year. Absolutely hated the linear galley. Very awkward for two (slim) people to cook together as...

Re: Highfield CL vs UL Dinghy

I have a UL310. Great dinghy but your concern is valid. What is not really apparent from Highfield's literature is that the tubes have larger diameter than most other boats, making the dinghy quite...

Re: Noisy Neighbours

Did not read the entire thread but here is my opinion as a fellow Georgian Bay sailor. This is like going into a night club and complaining about noise. There are several places to be simply avoided...
