Re: Necessary for CO detectors to be "for marine use"?

Re: Necessary for CO detectors to be "for marine use"?

I had two Home Depot CO detectors. One left by previous owner and one I purchased. Both failed in shot time. Replaced with marine unit and no problems after 18 months of use.

Re: Traditional or digital navigation - which is safer?

Like others, I began sailing well before the advent of electronic navigation. I still carry paper charts, pencils, parallel rules, and dividers.
Most days I rely on the electronic navigational...

Rudder post goes up and down

The rudder post goes up and down as the wheel is turned.
Does something need adjustment or replacement?
The boat is a 1984 Ticon 30 (successor to the Chrysler 30 and TMI 30).
It is a spad rudder....

Re: Is the macgregor 26 on Sea really so bad as they say

Re: Is the macgregor 26 on Sea really so bad as they say

I am a training Captain and have done trainings on MacGregor 26's with their owners. Generally, the boat failed to meet owner expectations.

While I try not to make judgements on the choices...

Re: Isotherm vs Dometic Portable Cooler Reliability

I looked at both the isotherm and Engle portable units. The energy consumption and features are very similar. I chose the Isotherm because of its larger capacity. I also added 200 watts of solar to...

Re: Fly infestation, Eastern Chesapeak

May flies. They and their green deposits will disappear shortly if not already. We were hit with them last year. We scrubbed and scrubbed to get rid of the green deposits only to learn that they...

Re: Anchor Chain Grip alternatives?

I have the older style Mantus and am very happy with it. The design is simple and works well every time. I am not a fan of pins that are going to receive a heavy load. There is no pressure applied to...

Re: VHF - Transmitting Issue (?)

Same problem. Same location.

I was hearing the WX channels just fine but was not communicating with other channels. The SeaTow channel worked, but we are only a 100' from their transmitter so that...

Re: Are paper charts as a backup still necessary?

Anything connected to a battery will ultimately fail. This is seldom at a convenient moment. And yes I have been aboard when a bad regulator blew all the electronics.

Re: Cruising and the aging sailor

I have been sailing for 69 years and have no plans to stop. Bought my current boat at age 71 and my wife learned to sail in her 70's. We sail the Chesapeake weekly, the ICW annually, offshore...

Re: How many HEADS does a boat really need?

I have always been amazed by frequency of non-operational heads on boats with multiple heads. In 50 years of sailing I have only once been on a boat with a single head that it broke down. In that...

Re: Mixing Amps on a House Bank?

I have different sized lead acid house batteries. I noticed that charging seemed to cease once the smaller battery was fully charged. I have now separated them with a switch and have had no issues.

Re: Atkins & Hoyle replacement 3/8" (.375") Rubber round cord

I went to
Grainger Supply with a piece of the old gasket. They determined the density and sold me enough to do the whole boat for about$30. Two years on and working just fine.

Re: Buyer Beware, Not a fair eBay seller.

We are currently researching and designing solar panels for our boat. Several times I have seen cautions about flexible panels that are constantly flexing. I visualize them as floppy panels. I also...

Re: A non US citizen with Delaware registration flys what flag?

Dockhead, you fail to see the distinction between a state registered boat and a USCG documented vessel. A documented vessel is ship of a sovereign nation. A registered boat may only operate in...

Re: A non US citizen with Delaware registration flys what flag?

The questioner states the boat is Delaware Registed. A vessel cannot be documented in the United States by a foreign owner. The owner should fly a Yacht ensign if he wants the stars and stripes. A...

Yes, many boats are overpriced. If you can offer a justification for a lower price it may help the seller separate the market value and his fond memories. I have watched several boats deteriorate as...
