Re: Mystery Easy

Easy's are excellent boats and good value for money. I particularly like the sensible cruising rig. As with any home-build, a survey is a must.

If you go catless cruising on a cat, most ports will...

Re: An extra-heavy-displacement 11ft long Atlantic Proa for circumnavigation

Serious note to the OP:
You have to build it in ferrocement. The only appropriate material to give you the extra-heavy-displacement you need.

Also, 100 years from now it will still provide a good...

Re: An extra-heavy-displacement 11ft long Atlantic Proa for circumnavigation

Possible seasickness is the least of your problems.

Also, the person you refer to as "my woman" will probably leave you long before you've started construction.

Re: About to buy this boat

I spent a weekend on one in Holland in the 70's.
The accommodation is pretty cramped.
Essentially a plywood one-man tent with the pointy bit at the bottom.

Good sea boats but very basic living.

Re: About to buy this boat

If it is the Tangaroa for sale in north Queensland, be aware that there appears to be an issue with the rig.

The mast is too short, and is raked too far aft.
In some of the pictures, it looks...

Re: Insurance for Woods design or homebuilt

No problem with the design, Woods has a proven record, no structural failures ever that I know of. Good safe boats that sail well.

In Australia, Pantaneus (spelling?) and Club Maritime have...

Re: Wharram Thoughts

Looks like it was commissioned by someone who could afford Nigel Irens' rates, told him exactly what and how he wanted it, and got what he asked for.

I remember seeing pictures of the...

Re: Looking for Mumby 48 owners or sources of information.

Congratulations, you have bought a fine boat. I did some research into the Mumby 48 years ago for a project that never happened. A super-strong, spacious cat that sails well.

Do a bit of Google...

Re: Surveyor in or around Airlie Beach QLD

I haven't done business with him, I don't own a boat.

He's a known quantity in the Whitsundays marine industry. Respected by insurers, commercial operators, private owners. At least 50% of the...

Re: Wharram Thoughts

It certainly is, and someone spent a lot of money and time to make it so.

Got a look from aft yesterday. The bigger Wharram classics (Narai, Tehini etc.) have about the same freeboard aft as fwd....

Re: Wharram Thoughts

Two Wharrams anchored out front today: A Pahi 31 which has been cruising through here annually for many years. A very well-kept minimal cruiser. About 10 years ago I saw this boat beam reaching...

Re: Some Cats are double the price of others ?

I only read the thread title. My first thought was that 2,000 kg of Mercedes Benz costs a lot more than 2,000 kg of Hyundai.

Re: What design is this?

If the windows were flush with the hull in that area, they'd be angled and catch a lot of direct sun.
The "shoulders" look like they'd provide a bit more shade and provide indirect light, as well as...

Re: Wharram Thoughts

RedReuben: about 25 years ago there was a pretty racy Tane based here in the Whitsundays, named K.I.S.S., painted battleship grey.
She had a cutter rig, big mainsail, and was sailed hard and...

Re: Wharram Thoughts

Every time I see a Wharram in the bay I smile. Last year there was one week where there were six of them in the anchorage, ranging from a Pahi 31 to a Tiki 46. Very pretty boats. They were my...

Re: Wharram Thoughts

Reminds me of the 27' Tane me and my hippie mate bought for $350 in 1971. Possibly the worst-built Wharram ever, but we didn't know that.

We knew nothing about sailing, we just knew that on a...

Re: Calculating power requirements for catamaran.

Rob: Trying to estimate the space in the EX40 accom hull. Is there standing headroom on the middle floor space, or only in the hull?

(Apologies for thread drift.)

Re: For the Aussies

Modern ply/epoxy/glass construction is as good as anything else. Easy to maintain or repair.

Most of the Aussie cats under discussion here are Duflex, not foam. I don't think anyone uses Kevlar...

Just for interest, Google "Easy catamaran for sale" and have a look.

About 150+ of them sailing, they are known as a quick safe comfortable boat. The best part for family cruisers is the cutter...

Not so many years ago there was a big fuss about a certain Thai-based Italian-owned boatbuilder whose name I won't mention.

There were issues to do with build time, build quality, big extra...

Re: Who has the nicest Kit Catamaran

If you have lots of money and time, the bigger Schionning and Oram kits. Also worth looking at Spirited and Grainger offerings. (Word is that the Fusion is heavy and slow for the money.)

Mid-level...

Re: Would I be crazy to cross oceans on a 32' LWL, 11' beam catamaran?

Lots of good advice here.

44C's idea of starting with an honest weight budget and working from that is probably the best of the many.

Whether the tone is kind or harsh, we have all been saying...

Re: Would I be crazy to cross oceans on a 32' LWL, 11' beam catamaran?

Your propulsion will fail within sight of land after you set off. 500 watts is just enough for 5 lightbulbs. Your expensive project will be towed back at some expense, and everyone will shake their...
