Grant, Thanks for your response on cell coverage and yes I agree that the world is changing quickly. I also believe that Starlink will make a big difference next year and drive satcomm prices down dramatically. I use Garmin InReach too for passages and it is extremely helpful, but expect IridiumGo to cover forecasting and weather needs going forward. I plan to have a website to chronicle our adventures and will send you a link.

    Thanks!

(The previous owner developed an amazing spreadsheet of maintenance checks. Includes a variety of separate sheets for part/serial numbers, electrical cabling codes, supplier contact details etc._

Hi Grant, I just try to provide factual guidance. The NZ rules are based on factual circumstances wherein people were truly stuck in NZ because there were no flights out. The situation has changed for most persons as there are means for repatriation or to depart to another country [few] from which they can apply anew for another visa. They have empathy but the reason to allow for extended stays has to be compelling. As to the number of cruisers involved it certainly isn't many and the boat can be put on the hard and they just go home and return if and when the Covid issues become resolved. A date uncertain. Take care, stay safe and healthy.

Hey Grant. We’re still holding onto the idea of going up to Fiji in July but are watching one day at a time. Have put some stuff on hold in case we don’t go and have to start catching up if we do go (e.g. CAT1, MNZ re-reg, off shore insurance). Quite a bit of money to spend “just in case”. If we do go, may need one extra crew so will keep in touch but please don’t get too excited , may still cancel. If the opportunity stretches into August, we’ll probably pass.
    Thanx for contact
    Andre

    Biography
I'm a Kiwi and enjoy cruising round New Zealand & Fiji with periodic trips to/from and around other South Pacific Islands. Catch the odd fish and do occasional Club races. Use my boat as much as I can. Delight in the whole nature thing. Get a kick out of doing little projects on the boat.
I am single, in my late fifties, with 4 (independent) adult children. I work in IT and also deliver sailing courses part time. Also have NZ skippers licence.
I've a reasonable degree of sailing competence to keep myself out of trouble. My boats are relatively basic compared to some and my needs are simple.
The plan is to retire in the next few years and sail offshore. After a little island hopping in the South Pacific I'd like to sail to some cold places.
I lead a quiet life, read widely and haven't had a TV for 10 years.

The cure for everything is salt water: sweat, tears or the sea. Yeah right, I wish.
