Monohull for a Family of 5

Hi! We are in search of a monohull for me, my husband, and our three girls. They are 7, 4, and 10 months old. Our budget is $150k and we plan to live aboard for 3-5 years cruising the East Coast and Caribbean. We are exhausted searching for the right model and thought I'd see if any of you have some ideas? We would like to be under 50' and need 3 cabins-ideal would be 3 state rooms! We very much do not want more than 2 heads.

One suggestion is a catalina 42, 3 cabin version. Many for under 100K which leaves plenty for upgrades. These could cross oceans, but what you are describing is likely more up it's alley. Lots of interior for price.

Your probably looking for a center cockpit design in the 45' or so range. Three stateroom layouts are not that common though. I have one with 3 cabins and 2 heads at 47'. But in your price range your looking for something in the late 80s to mid 90s. So leave enough in the budget for refit. Otherwise you might look into a used charter boat from the caribe an fleet, which would be fine for what you have in mind but again will need a budget for refit of tired equipment. It only took 3 years to find our current boat, but we're looking to cruise farther afield with 2 kids. I figure my refit budget about $30,000.00, with me doing all the labor including rebuilding the engine. It runs fine but don't want to chance it.

You might want to take a look at some Hylas/Stevens 47s...many of which can be had in your price range.

We paid $139k for our first cruising boat the Hunter 450 six years ago, it was a lot of boat for the money. It would serve your purpose just fine with a few upgrades and provide plenty of elbow room compared to other 45ft monohulls.

Any ex-charter boat should suit your purpose. lots of beneteaus in the 40 to 50 foot range.

One thing to be aware of with ex charter boats, make sure it has an onboard sanitation system. The last tie I chartered the boat (Bene 50) had no holding tanks, all waste was dumped directly overboard.
If your planning on cruising in US waters you will need a holding tank and system so you don't run afoul of no discharge laws. The laws are pretty straightforward about it.
I'm not sure if the Virgin Islands has changed since I last chartered but it was pretty common.

Stevens 47! Did it with family of 5. North Carolina to Trinidad and back - 2 years. Survived Hurricane Ivan in Grenada. Great boats - you might be closer to $175k ready to go but you will get it all back in re-sale.
