Home schooling on boat

Hi there ,
We have 2 children we home school on our boat . We choose "A -Beka Academy". They are out of Pensacola Fl.
They have several options but as far as we could find they were the only ones that offered a complete grade package with all books , teacher supplies and on DVD as we're seldom around good Internet .
They are also accredited which gives our kids a school of record.
The DVD also puts are kids with a pofesstional teacher .
We're very happy with it .

Gunther, congratulations on your decision! The cruising lifestyle tends to turn out pretty amazing kids. We see it all the time.

Our kids were 12 & 15 when we set off in 2001. We used an academy for university bound homeschoolers which is gone now but I'd think you could find others. Ours agreed with us that the cruise was a large part of the education, so getting scuba certified & a taking a Galapagos tour with a naturalist both showed up on their transcripts, with credits depending on how much time was spent. This also allowed us to tailor the curriculum to where we were. Cruising friends from Down Under usually had more rigid curriculums & it seemed sad that their kids had to study, say, ancient Greece when we were sitting in French Polynesia. Our kids were required to study (& write about, on our website) where we were, which made it much more relevant for them (& us).

Most of these responses are from the US, & since you aren't, you should know some things. The US has no unified HS graduation exams, so no real standards. Yes, crazy. Instead, they have University entrance exams (given through CollegeBoard.org, which are given at many English speaking high schools around the world. Each Uni also has a different application process, which may include writing samples. Our son did his exams (& Uni applications) in Fiji.

Since the academy we used is defunct, we don't write about it much, but Chris wrote his thoughts about Cruising Life, and Amanda also wrote about her experiences, & each wrote their own parts of the website. Sue also wrote about Cruising with Teens.

Either you don't have children or you don't understand a lot about education. I taught extra curricula classes in SCUBA diving and Video Production in the American High School system, in two different states for a number of years. When I first started out I taught by and from the textbook with standardized tests. It was rapidly apparent the quickest way to drain all true education from the experience was to stick to that program. Once I threw the text out the window and began teaching the kids to learn by experiencing, asking questions, being creative and taking risks their learning and their enjoyment increased exponentially. Some of my students went on to careers in both fields and have graciously credited our classes together as the catalyst to a lifetime of learning through exploration. Home schooling on a boat is the epitome of this type of education and I applaud any parent who gives their kids this gift. btw, we home schooled two of our kids and I will tell you it is NOT easy; definitely not something done for the parents.

Would you say the same thing of people who send their kids to private school?

I guess I don't understand how giving up a six figure income to educate your own kid benefits the parents, other than by benefiting there kids.
