Provisioning For Two ?

I've been searching but have not found what the weight might be for food/provisions for two adults for two weeks. Without putting a can of beans on the scales, just wondered if there was a rule of thumb or guesstimate per adult? There would be no backpacking foods or dehydrated foil bag dinners designed for light weight travels, just the normal cans and common packaging.

Trying to put the weight requirements for a boat together. If it makes any difference, the boat could be as a camping/workboat finish with a two burner stove, sink, maybe a small apt. size fridge.

Thanks, so 500 lbs would cut it with a fudge factor? Kg = 2.1 lbs..?

That covers a gallon of water per day per person, does that include the head, cooking and drinking? Really, I only have a pot of coffee a day and don't dring more than 44 oz of tea, the rest is a canned beverage.

just a rough estimate,allowing for washing in salt water with a fresh water rinse. and includes water for cooking.

if on a long passage would normally double those quantaties to build in a 100% safety margin.

also tend to bulk buy staples like rice,pasta,instant potatoe,couscous,milk powder,stock cubes,tinned tomatoes etc and store in air tight containers which will store for 12 months plus,for my own boat.

though on short deliveries i try to be more economical,but you will allways find needy livaboards at the other end who will dispose of any unused stuff!!!!!!

Thanks, so is a water maker worth it's weight? Being a mechanical thing, it could fail, can't they? Hand pump water makers?

Another thought, I expect to cruise alot in fresh water rivers, lakes. What about water filters and can a boat have plumbing to take in salt/fresh water for consumption (cooking, head and washing)? I understand that useage may be restricted on some lakes locally, but I would assume it's generally accepted if boats are designed with this alternative.

Many boats are plumbed with separate fresh and salt water systems.

Two faucets in the galley, and a valve to divert the head from one to the other,

And on a long cruise a water maker would be high on my list. (other than the hand held we already have in the emergency bag)

Thanks Sara, I have seen ads where heads were on salt water but I have not seen one, of course I'm a lake/river boater too, but hoping that will change. If I find a boat that is not plumbed, I'd like to consider doing it. Since I'm trying to keep it trailerable, it probably won't be fitted for any alternatives, just my guess.

Hand held as an emergency back up....good idea!
