Looking for Solar Still

Help. Sometime ago I saw a webpage describing a small solar still for ocean use. It used a couple of plastic bags some cardboard and a couple other things I can't remember. Has any one seen that page or one like it? Google keeps giving me either commercial sites or how to make a still in the ground.

There's also a standard commercial design similarly based on a transparent, rigid plastic ball.. Might be excellent in an emergency..

A friend who is getting out of boating recently gave me an army surplus one described as:
"Distallation Kit, Sea Water, Solar, Class B
Part #50D3882
Made in 1962 by Aquador plastics Brooklyn, New York
It is a small packet about 8"x4"x2" weighs about 2 Lbs
I have no idea if it works, or it's capacity It is not to be opened except for actual use.

Maybe you could find one on an Army/Navy Surplus store or website

I read about an emergency solar still called the Aquamate, but was horrified at the price. They want 238 bucks on eBay for what basically seems to amount to a beach ball and some clear tubing. Aquamate Solar Still Water Purification Inflatable Kit | eBay
It’s supposed to produce up to two liters of fresh water from seawater a day.

Further research led me to hearing about a project to produce small amounts of water in drought regions, by individual families, using a very simple, conical plastic bottle for solar distillation. It’s called the Watercone, and the inventor has just recently got them into production.

I just bid and won what may have been the first commercially sold unit a few weeks ago, and I see the second one is up for auction here: Ct Watercones Project Save Lives Solar Stills Program | eBay

I think I paid about fifteen bucks, including shipping, which probably won’t even cover the guy’s costs. He’s won some design awards, but he clearly needs help with marketing the thing. Right now, I gather he needs some eBay feedback.

Anyway, check it out. A few of these onboard, might be an asset to the cruising lifestyle, or the emergency kit.

When my cone arrives, I’ll submit a review. I’ll have to wait till summertime, I suspect cause it’s -5C right now here in Toronto.

By the way, I’m 21 months away from retirement, and about six months from my first ASA course.
