Aluminum foil veggie pack - alternatives?

We BBQ 3-4 times a week on our Magma Kettle Grill. We usually have an aluminum foil veggie pack and bake potatoes wrapped in foil.

Example: last night we made a green bean pack with GBeans, butter, ham, green peppers, onions, garlic and seasonings. Great complement to steaks and chicken.

We are wondering what reusable options are available so we don't add foil to the trash.

Thanks.

Hi, the size pan you would need would of course depend on the number you are feeding, but what we do is use a heavy skillet with a lid, and stir-fry or steam the veggie dishes on the burner in the galley. (It gets rid of the foil, but you may feel pretty warm while cooking it.) We mounted a fan that we can turn to blow on the cook, or the saloon table, and it made cooking where it was really hot doable.

I have a metal rack that goes on the grill and makes the holes smaller and it works great for grilling veggies. One side sits directly on the grill and the other lifts it some to reduce the heat.

Thanks for your thoughts. I hadn't thought of mini cast iron roaster. We grill when we can to reduce boat heat.

Red Herring, have you tried a basket on the grill? I wondered if I'd have to turn regularly.

Re: Aluminum foil veggie pack - alternatives?

I've used a grilling basket at home, but found it difficult to get one small enough for my little magma grill off the stern rail. At home, the basket works wonders and is an easy cleanup. They're also good for softer fish.

For the boat, we skewer the harder veggies like potatoes, carrots, or peppers. I've not tried with tomatoes (I know, it's a fruit but still ...). Skewers are easy to clean and store as well.

Pampered Chef has a grill basket that I use on my Magnum grill on my boat all the time. Their products hold up longer than most others that I've seen as well. I also have their Grill tool set and many other of their products I use on the boat as well as at home.

We use an old thick stainless and copper based frypan. Works a treat.

Sounds like skewers are a good option.

Go to your local camping shop or army surplus store and buy a "mess kit" - two rectangle units that one fits inside the other.

Re: Aluminum foil veggie pack - alternatives?

My favorite are Turkish skewers, they usually have ornate brass ends. They come in thin, for veggies or cubed meat and wide for meatball (like kofta) or even long thick sliced veg (like eggplant or squash). The metal heats it thru better vs wooden, super easy to clean and no waste like the wooden kind which also like to burn and snap off when you flip.

I've used the small cast iron dish. I love it, however it gets sticky and grimey and needs a lot of water to clean (my partner bakes brownies in it...errr).

I'm about to try out tiles on the grill to make small pizzas, breads and certain veggies too, much easier to clean than the cast iron.

My old boat neighbor swore by the silicone sheets and it's on my shopping list.

Btw, a favorite veggie side I like that's easy to make and one handed even for underway are fresh spring rolls. You need a plate for water, quick soak of the rice disc and roll in the ingredients. Bbq veg is good, just wrap in lettuce, spine removed, with other herbs like mint and basil, so it's dry against the rice paper. 4 ingredient peanut sauce.
Its a great salad burrito thats low carb. I do a Med one too, with tzaziki, or a tahini sauce one with some lentils in the roll for fiber/carb.....only have to grill the meat.
