Re: Spring lines

I thought whether it was Forward or Aft referred to the end of the boat it is holding. Any line whose purpose is to keep the boat from moving parrallel to the dock would be a spring line. A mooring line would be that line (s) which keeps the boat's distrance from the dock in check.....? UhOh.....Get the Chapman's out!!

You're still opposite/backwards. On the boat, if the line on from the boat goes toward the bow on its way to attach to the dock, it is "forward." If the line goes toward the stern to attach to the dock, again from the view point from the boat, it is "aft." That is as clear as I can make it. Either I'm a lousy teacher or ... Still, if one is in the southern hemisphere where everthing is upside down and water drains circling in the "wrong" way ...

This is also how USPS teach their courses. If it leaves the boat and goes toward the aft end of the boat to an attachment point on the doct, that is an aft spring line.

The diagram is correct. it is just that they have shortened the name of the spring. All springs have three names.

From the bow of the boat leading aft on the dock is is called the After bow spring.
From the stern of the boat leading forward on the dock is called Forward quarter spring.

Ther is no aft or stern spring an "aft" originating spring is called "Quarter."

The purpose as described in the diagram is correct.

OK. So, there is a lot of confusion. But I still say the the middle line pictured here is a forward spring line as it leads from the boat to the dock in the direction of the bow.

Re: Spring lines

If I may add a wrinkle of my own? (surprised this has not been mentioned!)
Best practice is to have the spring lines crossed, that is to say, the bow spring and the aft spring cross each other about amidships, on their way to the cleats. If set up real snug like this, they tend to work against each other, and actually pull the boat a little away from the dock. - good for fenders and topsides.
I was always taught to leave the bow and stern lines slightly slack. The spring lines are more important - it is these two lines that prevent fore and aft movement, not the bow and stern lines.
Yes, you really did start something!

Firstly I dont give a rats what they are called . But secondly using that nomenclature system, the forward spring stops the boat going backward and the aft spring stops the boat going forward, so I can see why some think the forward spring should be the name for the line that stops the boat going forward etc.

Re: Spring lines

Sorry, but if you don't use the correct nomenclature/jargon, you will be looked upon either as an ignoramous or at best an amateur.
