mississippi river sailing

I've been looking at a boat recently, a morgan 382 in great condition, but the boat is in maryland and I live in alabama. if I was to purchase said vessel, would it be more practical to attempt to sail it down the coast and to the tennessee river, or have it delivered straight to lake guntersville. I have very little experience lake/river sailing in large boats, I've spent more time on the open ocean, any help would be greatly appreciated

I would try to find something closer. That is about half of the great loop.

See what it would cost to truck it down. At least in years past, overland transport was surprisingly cost effective (many years since I've had a boat trucked though).

Grew up on the Mississippi River...it is not where you want to be in a sail boat.

Seen several come thru over the years heading south. Most have the mast stepped & setting on cribbing with ratchet straps holding it down. A few small ones 20' to 26' haven't done this but they were still motoring. On some pools where the channel is wider there are some sailboats, Alton pool is one, pool #19 is another, I would think there are others that'll have a few sailors. On the upper Mississippi there are plenty of marinas so fuel is not a problem. Good luck

I am not sure about the upper Mississippi, but down around New Orleans, it is not uncommon to see tree trunks moving swiftly down river, especially in the spring. The current can be very strong. It is not like a long skinny lake. There has to be a better way.

I appreciate it, y'all. I'll look into the trucking option, don't think draft would be a problem, only about 6 feet, but power would i think.
