re: Cruise Ship Costa Concordia - MERGED THREADS

Pictures from news reporter of the scene, some from angles we have not seen before. Particularly interesting is near the bottom where one sees which rock the Costa Concordia struck, and why it was impossible not have been on a chart... look how close to the larger islet it is.

No one has mentioned, in regards to the photos and the positioning of the ship, the effect the tide is going to have on the view.

How much can that account for?

It may or may not have been on the charts but it is definitely under water at high tide, from the water marks on the rocks in the foreground.

It's hard to tell distance the rock that was hit was from the large formation in the photos. The big ones must have been on the charts. We leave a good distance from in our small sailboat so it's hard to believe they would come that close. You have to think when there is a large rock formation there will be others under water. It's hard to believe that such a basic error created this whole thing. Mind boggling.

"A MYSTERIOUS blonde woman variously described as a ballerina, a ship employee and an undocumented passenger ...was reportedly seen with the captain of the Costa Concordia shortly before the 17-deck vessel became impaled on a rock off the Italian coast and pitched on its side... (T)he Italian media has speculated (she) might have been a special guest of the captain..."

If this be true, maybe the captain should fear the wife more than the public prosecutor

Or perhaps the tabloids/hollywood/disney could quit stealing stories from the Greeks one day. Odysseus' caution is well documented. Or perhaps we've learned nothing and need to legislate a store of wax on the bridge of these vessels, to fill the ears of the crew and prevent them scuttling their ships on the rocks to the songs of sirens.

As Atoll said max 60 cm - generally no more than 50 cm ...... So, no tide to speak of.

If you want to keep track of weather and ops, here is the web cam overlooking the bay with the ship in the background.

Very tiny tides in the Med. I'm guessing not more than 20 - 30 cm. The wet spots are probably just splash from surf.

re: Cruise Ship Costa Concordia - MERGED THREADS

Levantes may stirr up the tide a bit. I experienced a few being in Maroc.
One morning tha guardsman woke me up "Les bateaux, les Bateaux," he cried.
As the Med Sea can be icy, I got my wetsuit and ran to the shore.
All 23 boats were drifting in the smallish surf. I have a jockey posture and my 53 kgs were no match for the heavy sloops. The small 420' s were no problem.
I got help from two (naked) German girls who helped me to get the boats in.

A sudden high tide washed the boats from the beach. The Med is always full of surprises.

re: Cruise Ship Costa Concordia - MERGED THREADS

Here's what I found when it comes to reconstructing the accident.

Seems like just after they hit the rock near Le Scole island engines went off and the vessel was in inertia motion for a while. Then it was drifted by the wind towards the shore.
