Re: Carnival Cruise Liner Crushes Marina In Its Wake

Is there hope that one or more tugs will be used next time, if there is a next time?

Use to be a requirement that a pilot and two tugs escort any vessel over 300 feet out of a commercial harbor. The cruise industry gained enough political power to do away with that requirement for cruise vessels. Now they can rip apart any and all small boats without much repercussion. And they do.

Is that a Messina port regulation or some other port?

Pilots? With a few notable exceptions ( I believe Tampa may be one ) its a case of 'all care.. no responsibility' which is why you always write 'to master's orders and pilot's advice' in the bridge book.

Same with tugs... but more a case of 'no care no responsibility'

Every power boater should be forced to watch these videos. Many skippers have no idea what kind of mayhem they incur with their big boats.

Somebody else's property is always a small sacrifice.

I would be demanding a replacement boat and payment for a rental in the meantime.

And you would get it. Chump change for them, compared to putting a 300 meter 12 story cruise ship on the bricks. It would have been an entirely rational decision.

Figure a late fee of $250k/day for failing to pull out of port on time, and the total damage from the collision is reported as $250k... The risk from the ship operators side is well worth it. It's only 1/10 times you will crush the pier, it's 1/1 times you choose to depart late you will pay that fee.

Most commercial harbors have full time pilots and tug services available. Usually insurance companies dictate the use of these services; although ports can require their use. Shippers usually demand p/t services to prevent delays in loading/unloading. Cruise liners seem to be avoiding p/t services to cut corners--with the obvious end results like tipping over the cruise boat, sinking it, etc.
Most tug services are extremely professional in their conduct, except when it comes to pesky sailboats mucking up the harbor channels. Not uncommon to hear harbor control almost yelling into their radio channels at some clueless sailor being in the way of tug and barge systems. Most recreational sailors do not know enough to get clearance to enter a commercial harbor let alone carry and use the Pilot book for the area.

I would love to see these destructive monster cruise ships be banned from operation. Bad enough seeing how much they destroy the oceans and sea life, and now this. In a world that values money over human lives, never mind the natural world, it will never happen.

That's the economic side of it, for sure... but wouldn't such an accident, caused by some poor decisions, be career enders for the captain and pilot?

Re: Carnival Cruise Liner Crushes Marina In Its Wake

I managed to look straight at the stern of the huge Norwegian cruise liner berthed in Seattle while commuting on the Bainbridge Island ferry just yesterday.

My wife and I discussed the windage of this ginormous block of flats.

As an engineer it's obvious these are barely classifiable as a ship anymore. Some of the big container ships also fit this classification. Mandate the use of tugs would be my engineering response.

Maybe this will push for these behemoths to be forced to berth offshore. Commuting by tender might not be as convenient for lazy tourists but it will introduce them to the romance of travel by sea.

Note to self. Avoid marinas near cruise ship terminals.
