[QUOTE=Tricolor;2588227]I gave Nikki, and Warren (former) owners of the Lagniappe the benefit of the doubt, NO they are no kids nor children, they are adults responsible for the mess they created. After they changed the text in their GoFundMe page they lost me. I strongly believe that because the watching eye of forummers and others they not run.

I know that the cruisers family keep an skeptic eye on Nikki and Warren where ever they appear, they lost a lot of sympathy across the cruiser community.

And please call them no more Kids but Nikki, and Warren (former) owners of the Lagniappe.
Which particular part of the cruising community would that be? 50% of the .001% of the cruising community that have been following this thread?

Maybe they can move on and make a highly rated movie like this one

Check how they started out....

I've learn't a lot about people on this thread.... not all of it good.

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

That's not a great photo and it is hard to see what is really going on there below the water. The rest of the lower keel could be in shadow, or it might just be gone. Plus, we don't know when that photo was taken and whether the keel actually fell off right away after the grounding, or some time later after getting bashed on the shoal for a few days.

Definitive:
  1. Serving to define or identify as distinct from others.
  2. Supplying or being a final settlement or decision; conclusive.
  3. Authoritative and complete.

I asked if anyone had any definitive answers on whether the keel actually fell off and if it happened right away. If you don't have a definitive answer then not answering, or saying "I/we don't know" is a perfectly acceptable answer.

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

Anybody who gave money above and beyond the stated GFM goal did so aware of the fact. That is to say they didn't care that the goal had been met, but felt like they wanted to give to these people regardless of the circumstances. They were moved by the story, inspired by these young people's joie de vivre, and wished to contribute to their future endeavors or whatever.

It's hard for me to see anyone bothered by this as anyone other than someone who is not wanting sour grapes.

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

Seems they have handed the title to the wreck to someone else and found another boat to buy.

https://nypost.com/2018/03/01/couple...-a-new-vessel/

Mark Reinecke, a 77-year-old retired doctor living in St. Petersburg, decided to sell his 1985 Cheoy Lee Pedrick sailboat, named The Odyssey, after getting wind of their story, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

“So I’ve had it there behind the house trying to think of something to do with it,” Reinecke told the newspaper. “That boat is like part of our family, but we also feel that the sailboat deserves to be at sea, not just sitting there, so when this situation came up, we said, ‘Let them have it.’ It’s like passing it on to the next generation.”

Free market...solves nothing. The end result of unregulated capitalism is the death of both the consumer and the worker.
You do realize that these are unsecured loans handed out to kids with no jobs or work history. About the only thing worse is a payday loan.

Interest rates and risk go hand in hand in a free market system...except the govt is actually artificially driving loan rates down. The govt compensated by making it very hard to file bankruptcy on a student loan. This is pure market distortion and nothing remotely like a free market.

PS: Keel bolt inspections: I suspect these would make most 20yr old boats effectively worthless as the cost of the inspection would be more than the boat is worth.

Removal of fittings in cabin to gain access, removal of keel, sandblast and epoxy etc, renew all keel bolts, replace everything, cost me NZ$4500 in 2015.( 30 year old boat).

Sad thing was old bolts were all fine but it did need the sand blast and epoxy.

Could this be there next big mistake the $1 yacht? Maybe they might need another injection of cash via GoFundMe?
Or maybe they are going to join these other American sailing legends!

'Sitting behind my house' in Gympie is probably quite different to 'sitting behind my house ' in St Petersburg, Florida, especially if you are a retired doctor.

I hope its 'Bristol' and they go on to have a very successful cruising life.. although I know that will really seriously p orf some posters on this thread....
