Hi guys, I have the option of putting either a outboard or an inboard engine to my boat, it's a 26ft surf cruiser,can anyone tell me what would be the best way to go?thanks.

Sorry must've deleted the info. I've got a 26ft surf rider cruiser.i was wondering whether to put an engine in her or put an outboard on, boat will just be for family outings and some fishing with friends,alot of work needing done so not that big a budget

You are in the length territory where either would work. The upside is that for the same horsepower, an outboard would cost less. The downside to an outboard is that in chop your propeller may spend part of the time out of the water. Having an outboard hanging off your transom is ugly...if that matters.

I see your in London which might influence the choice of fuel. What engine did it have in it?

Oh a powerboat. Most likely an inboard. An inboard was there before and therefore that is what your boat is set up for.

I'm in Edinburgh not London mate diesels about 50 cheaper than petrol here.

Got it with no engine but can get a diesel engine for about 700 that's meant to run for 8hrs on 3 gallon

What's the setup with running the electrics using an outboard? Is a separate generator needed?

If you want that boat to plane it will need a minimum 50bhp per tonne and that boat with an engine is going to weigh 2 tonnes. So 100hp will get you 16 - 20 knots in calm conditions. You won't be going faster in rough conditions.

For an outboard on a budget then something like this:

But it will run 20 Gallons per hour at speed.

Diesel Inboard, then this would be nice if it has the stern drive which can be as much as a second hand engine.

Modern outboards in the size range you are looking for will run all the electrics you require so it isn't a problem.
