New Social Group for Philippines

Hi all,
I just opened a new social group: Cruisers & Sailing Forums - Boats & Sailing in The Philippines

"Boats & sailing in the Philippines".
With the number of foreigners retiring to the Philippines or cruising the area, I thought it'd be of value to have a specific place to gather info. .

Two seasons in the Philippines: hot and hotter. Wish I could endure any of it.

Actually, wet and wetter, it never gets above 85º. It's the humidity that gets you 80 -100% @ 80º. Arizona, Nevada & Death Vally, CA is hot!

And P.I. is good on the skin of us old farts.

Mike,
Noonsite has quite a bit of info for PI cruisers. Noonsite: Philippines

In the photograph, notice my arms separated from my body. I'm trying to maximize body-cooling in the so-called "cool season."

Mark, that's pretty formal dress isn't it? That t-shirt's supposed to be pulled up about a foot higher.

Glad you found it, John.

delmarrey, thanks, I've been reading noon-site for years.

Re: New Social Group for Philippines

Hi Mike,

Looks like we are on our way with crew, and a sat phone. Phone arrived yesterday, and we will activate it tomorrow, and check it out. Crew arrives on the 12th, and we will check out on the 14th. Provisioned, and fueled up headed for Hawaii. Philippines next year as long as my lucky star holds out!

We had new zippers put in the bimini for our extended shade panles. 2 water catchment panels made in addition to the bimini should keep us in water. Damn pump went out in the watermaker, and can't afford to wait for parts. Last week we caught 40 glns just opening up the cooler lid for a couple of hours, and Mel showered in the cockpit. Next thing we knew several other boats were out on deck showering.

How's your preperation going with the boat? Hopefully it is smooth, and you will be on your way too! We'll meet up soon........i2f

Excellent! Good to know there is a group for those of us who prefer our water crystal clear, our diving world class, our tidal currents ripping and our women small and brown!

Re: New Social Group for Philippines

Great to read this, John! I received word yesterday that one of my legal issues has been successful, so we're planning to head to L.A. in the week of the 13th to 16th to have the boat hauled, re-rigged & add a few bells & whistles. Hopefully, we'll single-up by the end of the month & head for Hawaii. I'll have to take the odd flight back to deal with court dates on the 2nd case, but I'm done with keeping life on hold, one of your posts woke me up to that.

Wishing you, Melanie & your crew fair, aft winds for your trip!

Mike

Glad I could be of assistance Mike. When do you think you may be in Hawaii?

Got to love those little brown women. I married mine twice just to secure my position............i2f

Re: New Social Group for Philippines

Note, double post. I first posted in response to i2f's concern about my having only one engine at 'meets & greets', then thought that it might be better posted here.

Today I passed a shop in Mandaue in Cebu which advertized Kubota diesels. I had just finished reviewing all the pages on the multihull forum and a poster there said: "As for cost, look for Kubota tractor engines. They bolt directly to marine transmissions (I'm not sure about sail drives), are reliable and are found in every country on the planet. Also, rebuilt engines are very common and are 1/3 the cost of the marine equivalent. Which means that after adding the bits that are needed for your boat, they come in at 1/2 the cost of a marine diesel." Unfortunately, they did not mention what marine transmissions were direct bolt-ons. Do you have any idea how to find this out? I suspect that asking at the shop is going to produce blank looks.

Well, that's about the toughest question I've been asked all year! I'm hoping that my parts arrive here soon(now!), then I've got a good 2 weeks of prep, so I'm hoping to leave L.A. at the end of July, weather window permitting. That should put me in Hawaii the last week of August. So I'd guess at sometime in the last couple of weeks of August, depending on Murphy. The last few days he seems to be on vacation, just hope he's not resting up for a final assault!
(And, I just realized that I'll have to return my car to Canada, first!

Bruce626,
Are you referring to Beta, the marinized version of the Kubota? They're a swap-in for the Atomic4, with the mount kit. Beta Marine diesel engines
You can mate them to a volvo sail drive, according to this article.
