Yoho!

I'm a veteran of the US Navy (10 years), and am beginning my sailboat training. Over the next 2 years, I will be shopping for a 50+ footer to purchase so I can retire and sail across the big pond.

Drop a line if you have good link where I can keep up to date on slip fees in Hong Kong and Beijing - I really want to sail from the middle of the US to both cities!

Beijing might be a bit difficult to get to by your 50' boat. It's quite far inland with no navigable rivers to get there. Is this a troll?

what do you mean by "a troll"?

there is a "great channel" that connects Beijing to the Yangze River... from there, straight to the Bahai Sea..

Doesn’t the Northern Canal connect Beijing (via the Haihe River) to the sea port of Tianjin?

Yeah, that's what I meand by the "great channel".. maybe it's called the "grand canal".. either way, I understand it to be a major shiping route from Beijing to the Bahai, which is the northern part of the Yellow Sea..

at least, that's what I've seen on satellite maps...

Welcome aboard! Navy veteran here too. May I try to convince you to think of something smaller for your retirement? I believe 32-36 feet is plenty big enough unless you have a wife and a couple of kids to take with you.
Fiberglass hull, cutter rig, diesel engine and aft cockpit is what I always recommend. Welcome to the forum of opinion. I do have some experience to base my opinions on having owned boats from 22 to 42 (not counting dinghies) and crewed on boats to 55.

I've been inside several makes and models, and i would be most comfortable in at least a 50 footer... no wife or kids... but i do like to host parties and i love to cook... and 50 is a nice, round number.. esp when crossing the oceans.. lol
