From Motors to Sails

Hi everybody. We've been reading the post for a while now but I finally decided to join.

Well we did it! After years of talking about it, we're finally switching from motor boating to sailing. I figured I'd stop the guy from dreaming by giving him sailing lessons and then joining him too just so I know what the heck he was talking about. And we both ended up loving it! Then we took Sailing 103-104 and still we had no boat. I told him we better buy something before we forgot everything we had learned. Sailing once every 2 years is not really good, so hubby as he always does thing impulsively went out one day to "check out" a boat and came home with it. It's been one year now and although we don't go out as much as we would like, we've been out a few times, spent a couple weekends on it, and already have a few story to tell... The adventure continues.

are you keeping a log? if so, count up the number of sailing days you logged last year, and make a commitment to better that number this year. whether you're sailing a lake or an ocean matters very little; what matters most is how much time the hand has been connected with the tiller.

Can you tell us more about the boat?

That's a great idea Bash. I will add up the days and promess we will do better. Actually we are planning to go for long weekends all through the month of July. I know it's going to be really hot in South Florida (we don't have A/C) but really on the water, it's not that bad with the brise and a good fan... Just got to keep the mosquitoes away. Our boat is trailerable so we can take it almost anywhere (the trailer will let us) and we keep it at home to avoid the storage fees. We laugh as we say that this is our practice boat and let's make all the mistakes now. One day we do want to get a bigger one that we can go weeks (or months) at a time. Until then, we'll stay close to home and explore our beautiful state.

Its really important to keep a log (journal) of your activities on the water. Each time you see or learn something new or encounter different weather is a new experience and sometimes just reviewing what you've done or not done can be loads of help.
You probably did it on your powerboat to make certain you kept track of the engine time so it won't be that hard to add wind direction and speed and what sails you used.
