Another: close to retirement engineer and the need to sail

I moved just recently from the west coast to the east coast (job-related) and was looking for a project boat to retire on in five years or so. And a project I found, it properly qualifies me as crazy to take it on and I expect to get a lot of ribbin' about it.

A month ago I saw this awesome 'abandoned refit' for sale, parked in a marina in Maryland. Upon a bit more investigation she turned out to be the 'Pegaso', one of two C&C built Custom 62s. The first one has an aft cockpit, (1981 'Marauder') this one has a center open pilothouse (1982). If you read up on the sparse info about them, they are a custom variant of the 61s that made quite a splash in the racing world in the old days.

'Pegaso' went around the planet twice and then ended up 15 years !!! on the dry, largely stripped of anything un-boltable. Good news, I don't have to remove old parts when I want to add new parts, but there is still a lot of work to do. Thinking about a hybrid drive (electric motor/generator, LiFePO batts, and a Diesel generator) Deep Blue? some solar, modern navigation, ... as far as the money will go. Ahm, yeah, it needs a new Ketch rig, sails, winches, ...

I bought a stripped project and I am glad to not have to do the throw away. I am using a twin jet drive on my project, no props slowing me down, twin VAWT that can be raised and lowered according to the wind. I have been reading about hybrid electric drives and go that route. However plan room for batteries that are non convential, I am seeing electric car batteries as a choice, crashed cars.

We met a Pegaso in Bora Bora in 1987. We have it recorded as a 65 ft. ketch. Wondering if it is the same boat. Did you measure yours' overall length? Of what material is yours constructed? Have you a picture?

I like your idea of hybrid. I'm knot a couple of years away from a vessel to call home. I'm very interested in hybrid and I probably can't help much because I don't know much about hydraulic forces.
Here's some thoughts if interested.
Would the propeller drag adversely effect the vessels handling if such propeller was to be designed to torque the shaft underway of cloth such to generate electricity? I really like the idea because most of the time a vessel simply sails and if she's charging the batteries whilst underway with momentum; you beauty.

An engineer doing a +60ft refitt on a stripped boat and you want to go sailing. It doesn't add up, unless you retired from Google at 30. The cost and time, will surprise you. That's way every boatyard is a field of broken dreams. If you want to sail, find a smaller boat that someone else dumped a ton of money into. Working in a nasty boatyards during the summer gets old so freaking fast.

I wouldnt call my boat a project, although due to some wood rot and lack of previous owner being able to finish projects that were started makes it a project boat(among me wanting to bring the electrical up to ABYC stamdards).

Doing a full rebuild seems intimidating for me, but not unfeasible. One being motivated and having the ability to say I will forgo 'x' to work on the boat means you can get it done.

Dont cut corners, take your time to do it once and do it right. Draw out your plan and design and go from there. Goodluck, it is well worth the effort in the end(given you dont prolong the rebuild!)

Hi Ann, sorry for the late reply, it's 62' official, but with the davits and dinghy hanging out it is easily 65'. In 1987 you would have met the Jorge and Herta Altamirano, the original owners.
