My neighbor is a reporter for the NBC Today show and he is using my Boston Whaler to report on this story at 7:15 tomorrow morning. He was supposed to go down to the keys and do the story there but the helocopter they where going to use broke down.

Wowww freaky. Mind you that lady who got nailed by the Dolphin a year or so back probably doesn't think so. Been hit with a 10" flying fish one nite, that hurt and about as big as I'd want.

lodesman maybe right, they are starting to fight back. We've had crocs, a few stingrays, a dolphin and a few sharks, just off the top of my head, over the last 2 years. Should we be afraid or just blame global warming, maybe the waters too warm

You've never owned a cat have you? Watch one toy with a mouse, baby squirrel, etc. for hours sometime and tell me only humans kill for sport.

We get people medivaced off of the Suwannee river several times each summer from the same thing, 80-100 pound sturgeon jump into the air and boats running 25 mph slam into the fish as it's in the air. http://sandypaint.blogster.com/sturgeon_injures_boaters

Watching eagle rays jump is always spectacular, just really bad luck to be under one when it happens.

This accident is not as unusual as reported. At least one case every other year. It happened to my wife and me a few years ago. She was in the bow of the dink and I was behind her, both standing up. It was the same type of ray, a spotted eagle ray, the locals call it a whip ray. She was lucky she wasn't killed, had to fly home for extensive surgery. The ray must have jumped at least seven feet in the air as we were on plane, doing about twenty knots. It's like hitting a seventy pound sandbag! As an aside it's amazing how fast this type of news travels in the cruising community, friends cruising in the western Caribbean were aware of it within days.

Sailing into Bahia Banderas, Puerto Vallarta, a HUGE ray jumped out of the water a couple of hundred feet away at the most. I can only imagine what kind of damage could be done with that weight.

As far as this unforunate ACCIDENT. Mother nature does not know there are any rules, and just lives as if we didn't exist.

I am very saddened but the accident and loss of life, but it seems to me that it was not the stingray who attacked human as reported. It was human in speeding stinkboat who hit stingray while it did what it often does - jumped out of the water. Another example of sloppy journalism that shows how easy it is to distort the facts by swapping cause and consequence and than blame the victim.

I think that a point here that is being missed is that you should live everyday like it is your last because you just never know when or what is going to take you tho the other side!!
