A sea shantie (“shanty” "chantey," or "chanty") is a rhythmic work song, derived from the French command, "Chantez!” (“sing!") that was commonly sung to accompany labour on board large merchant sailing vessels.

However, there is also ample evidence in the literature that the word originated with the American lumbermen, railroad workers, dock hands and sailors of the mid 1800's. These were generally hard working, drinking, nomadic men who sang all day to ease their burden of work. They lived in shanties provided at their work camps and they relaxed, drank, and sang their favorite songs in shanties near the camps or along the waterfronts from New Brunswick to New Orleans. So their songs came to be called "shanty songs" by early folklorists.

Next chapter:
Cutless vs Cutlass Bearing?

They used to be called cutless because supposedly isn't damaged by fishing line etc, but everybody now calls them cutlass...

Re: Sailors be warned

The word cutlass is associated with sabre/sword.
Where cutless is associated with the names of plants, things or people.

Re: Sailors be warned

From Wikipedia:

Both Cutless and Cutlass are generic names for water-lubricated shaft bearings where the bearing surface is made from nitrile rubber and has lengthwise grooves to aid cooling water to flow past the bearing, these can be contained in a shell of resin or metal. Cutless was registered as a trade name for this type of bearing in the 1950s by one company, that company still tries to protect the use of this name despite the fact it is widely used and understood as a bearing type not a unique brand.
