Question aboud Rope and rope thimbles

Hello to all members of this forum. Sorry but I'm newbie here, but I think it's the right category for my thread.

I seek some help. I'm not really knowledgable in sailing stuff, so that why I writing here.

Does anybody know where I can find this specific rope? what brand is it? where can I buy this rope?


Does anybody know where to get thimbles in really good quality with these 3 kind of metals?

We can't ID a rope by a picture of the colored braid. Lots of different ropes can look the same.

It only matters because members on the forum live all over the world, so it makes it easier for people near by to you to answer. For example I could recommend some places in Ottawa or Toronto Canada, but I have never sailed in the UK.

it definitely looks like climbing rope,also not really suitable for marine use as it is quite hard and unflexible and has very little strech,and I've only ever seen galvanised ,bronze,or stainless thimbles for marine use.

the thimbles pictured look to be lightweight alloy,titanium or aluminium,specifically designed for climbers,that are quite likely to be unsuitable for marine use due to corrosion issues

Hi jaaaay. Welcome to the forum.

As others pointed out, this forum is international so knowing your location is pretty critical to helping you find your kit. Unfortunately I'm in the US and don't have much knowledge of UK suppliers so can't help there. Hopefully some of our members in your part of the world can chime in on that.

Since it is difficult to identify the rope and thimbles exactly from photos maybe you could let us know what the use would be. Different applications on boats call for different rope and they can look very similar though function very differently. For the thimbles, if you just need corrosion resistance then look for a decent marine chandlery and ask for stainless steel thimbles. If you want exactly what was pictured, can you identify the source of the photo?

Very interesting article. Was aware of the sequential failure issue but had not researched the other issues around non wire/rod rigging.

It does confirm that I'm still happy with my plain old SS 1X19 for the time being.

I like the knot used, instead of a splice, to hold the thimble in place.

Anyone know what that knot is called?

I am guessing this is for a slackline application. Climbers really dont use thimbles, nor care all that much about the aesthetics of "3 kind of metals", while slackliners do.

If so, you want to search for static line (not dynamic line). But sorry, I cannot ID that specific line from the braid color.

Regarding the thimbles, they are probably stainless with metal coatings. The gold one is probably a titanium nitride coating (like is used on drill bits). You just send standard thimbles to a shop that does this coating - not hard or all that expensive. It is a very nice coating - very scratch resistant and non-corrosive and shiny without needing to be polished.

As to the knot, it is just a standard slip noose/loop - it is much weaker than a splice and much bulkier - no-one serious would use it in preference to a splice.
