Re: $55 mooring fee

I always hesitate to wish a small business hard times but Nantucket Moorings is an exception. GREED! If I remember correctly, they require you to be off their mooring around 11AM or you will be charged for another night.

Years ago one had no problem anchoring in the harbor, now the place is filled with Nantucket Moorings. They will never again see another of my dollars!

Thanks Cotemar-- I will look for the anchorage you suggest outside the mooring area if we visit there again. Nantucket itself is a wonderful place to visit with fine beaches & eating places.

That's typical. Idiots who set the fees think that by increasing fees, they will get more revenue. They forget the whole "changing habits" thing that humans do. Same way our tax system works. If you take it all, no one will work.

We have never used them.

We anchor about 500 feet to the east of the light house in 8 feet of water.
Room for 30 boats with 7 to 1 scope. Great panoramic view and well protected.

I have never been there put it is a possiblity later this month unless I head north to Maine instead.

If you usethe anchorage is it a reasonable distance to take you dinghy in and is there a place to land it? Or is the dqainghy landing fee just going to offset the money saved by anchoring?

The dingy distance is farther but not by much. The beaches are closer to the anchorage and the view is much better.
1) Dingy dock is free
2) Showers are free
3) Trash is at the end of the dingy dock
4) Ice is there also
5) Heads are there

Great shopping and provisions one block to the right of the dock exit.

Re: $55 mooring fee

That area looks like it near 1st point! I anchored there in past years, if its the same place I anchored, it is not a picnic. The current is ferocious!!!! I had my anchor rode wrap around my keel there. Quite an experience.

Re: $55 mooring fee

foggysail,

Look at the chart above again.
First point is up on the right top of the view.
The current is in the white area of the chart (The stream).
No, you do not want to anchor there for the reason you mentioned.

Where I show for good anchorage is below the current stream.
Current is not a problem where I point to in the chart.
Its better anchoring with less depth, so less scope needed.
