What Order to Read the Pardey Books?

Is Self Sufficient Sailor first, then Capable Cruiser, then Cost Conscious Sailor? What about the other adventure books. They've been revised so many times I can't figure out what order they go in.

Thanks

Re: What order to read the Pardey books?

Try reading from page 1 then go to pages with higher numbers. This is difficult.

An easier approach is to open at the list of chapters and go for whatever attracts your attention most. Then read the boring parts when you run out of other reading material.

Re: What order to read the Pardey books?

The only benefit of reading them "in order" is to see the few areas where they changed their thoughts.

If that's really important to you, or you have OCD, you can always read them based on the sequence of the copyright dates, which tells you the sequence they were written in.

Re: What order to read the Pardey books?

Just read them in any order till you re-enforce your preconceived notions of how cruising should be done. The Pardeys' overall message of go small, go now, is always timely. The no engine, no frills, parachute anchor, full keel, ... is a little outdated for many.

Re: What Order to Read the Pardey Books?

This is the order of the original publications, I think.
I would read them in this order. There is repeated information but all-in-all well worth the read.

The Care and Feeding of the Crew 1980
Self Sufficient Sailor 1982
Capable Cruiser 1986
Cost Conscious Cruiser 1999

You will get feedback both positive and negative regarding these books.
Personally, I got a lot from them. I honestly appreciate the authors experiences and ability to share the knowledge, wisdom, and enthusiasm for wandering under sail. There are concepts to be learned which are truly as timeless as wind and waves.

Re: What Order to Read the Pardey Books?

Gotta love some on this forum, nothing better to do than post a stupid response. I always tell my kid's its better to be a smart ass than a dumb ass, but there is a fine line between the two...

In any case, the "original" copyright date isn't obvious on Amazon because of all the revisions. Otherwise, I just would have done that and not posted the question.

Paul L = helpful feedback, I'm sure it's dated material. I'm interested in the history of the sport as well, so some items may be helpful. 'back in the day' type stories. The 'go small go now' theme is what I'm looking for a bit, but my wife won't go too small so there is give and take there...

Dugout, thanks for those dates. - I'm not sure still not sure if Amazon is correct or confused. I will just get one and see how it reads...

First of all, Amazon wasn't part of the original question or context.

Second, Amazon isn't the only place to find copyright dates. Just search for each book.

Tell your kids smarts don't count if you're too lazy to use them.

On their own web page they mention authoring a dozen books. So you've got eight more to look up before you can figure out the sequence of their books. Unless, of course, you think Amazon is the be-all and the end-all of the printed word.

90% of the people on here have nothing better to do. CF is the definition of nothing better to do.

We are all waiting for the 10% of posts arount here that actually matter... LOL

I'll see your snide remark and raise you a go-to-hell...

I tell my kid, "Everyone likes a little ass but no one likes a little smart ass."

And I thought Barnakiel's advice was accurate. How can accurate be stupid?

As far as adding to the topic, I wrote something pithy about the relevancy of the Pardeys (God bless them) but then decided I got nothing...
