My service gun was an Uzi and it would've chopped that wood up decisively so I'm thinking it is just birdshot from a 12 gauge. Seeing that not all impacts are holes, and having observed the security type of guys in Venezuela (they carry old 12 gauge pistol grip home made style guns with corroded ammo), I'm pretty sure it is.

What I don't like is this aluminum foil hat conspiracy commenting when people were lucky to survive, like if they made it up or did it themselves.

Also, it has nothing to do with the current situation in Venezuela: we had the exact same going on in 2004 and 2005 and often survivors mentioned military dark clad guys being the perps. It's a region with bad guys attacking and on occasion killing cruisers. It's real, deal with it.

That it was either birdshot or possibly a larger caliber shotgun round makes the most sense given the photo and the reported circumstances. Imho that is . . . .

This is a genuine and serious issue. I live in the area, and have done Trinidad to Grenada and back more than a dozen times. Venezuela is predictably collapsing as the current experiment with socialism renders it a ward of the international community. This stalemate between Chinese/Russian and USA/West differing strategic interests is holding up any chance of progress in Venezuela. The former want their loans to Chavez repaid, and both groups understand the geo-political nature of the region, incl. the Gulf of Paria! Until there is light again in Venezuela, the situation with respect to Venezuelans having to go 'outside' to emigrate or plunder, only worsens.....I cancelled my Easter round trip this year, very sadly. I know the couple who were attacked most recently the week before, and I just decided to stay. I know of other attackes over the years. I had a run-in with pirates myself in 2010. Take care out there!
