Cook book?? I rarely use a cookbook. 😉
When I do, it’s usually a Betty Crocker we got when we got married 45 yrs ago.

My Daughter gave us The Cruising Chef Cookbook by Michael Greenwald
It’s an all around cookery book and very funny as well.
Of my many many cruising cookery books I’d take this one.
It is a no nonsense book , good healthy food and plenty seafood.
It even has a chapter of growing salads under the sails.
Pressure cooking the lot.
And what do do when you have one person on board that eats like a horse )

Cooking Under Pressure, by Lorna Sasse. Recepies for everything from soups to deserts. The pressure cooker is your friend. Less propane used, less heat intge boat, faster, turns even cheep cuts of meat into tender delicacies, and keeps everything contained when the boat is bucking and rolling.

Re: Only allowed one cook book, which one would it be?

I have a small Kindle Fire with several cookbooks, but my absolute favorite thing is The Paprika app. This app lets you download recipes from the Internet and make your own cookbook. You can also type in old recipe cards you may have, or something you learned at a cooking lesson in Vuda Marina in Fiji. You can create your own categories, too, so I have sections on Turkish Cooking, Mexican, Asian, etc. as well as the usual salads, main dishes, etc. Dishes can be in as many categories as you like so lasagne can be in beef, Italian, main dish, and pasta. After over three years of using the app, I have nearly 350 recipes with my own notes on how they worked out. I almost never use any other cookbook now.

I still have an old copy of the Joy of Cooking, but there is a new 2019 edition coming out in November, so I think my old book is going to the fee book shelf. I'll buy the Kindle version of the new Joy when it comes out. It still will have the solid info for the basics.

I've lugged The Cruising Chef Cookbook by Michael Greenwald for many many miles for over 40 years of cruising and frankly, I've rarely used it. It seemed like a good idea when I bought it, but when you are at sea and looking for ideas, I've found little inspiration there. It too will be headed for the giveaway shelf.

Those who have suggested a pressure cooker cookbook of some sort are right on. Pressure cookers are heavy bottomed enough that you can bake bread in them too. There are loads of cookbooks for them, so you should pick one that suits your taste, and I suggest you get an ebook version. That's what I have.

If you still want your one paper book find something weird and offbeat that isn't available online - like your local Women's Club collection of recipes - and take that.

Enjoy cooking at sea!

I would vote for “The Boat Galley”. In addition to great recipes, it contains a wealth of knowledge on setting up & managing the galley. As a live aboard, Carolyn’s experience & knowledge are first hand.

Yeah, but its such a drag having to read someone's life story every time you want to look up a new recipe.

Re: Only allowed one cook book, which one would it be?

I got rid of all my cookbooks except my pre-1970 Joy of Cooking 'cuz I never actually prepared more than one or two recipes in any of 'em. So I photographed (iphone) those and saved 'em to my iPad. Now, when I find something on the 'net and actually make it, I save or copy/paste the ingredients and directions into a word or notepad page, or I see something that looks good on in a magazine somewhere or even browsing through a cookbook in a store, I photograph it and add it to my collection. This gives me everything I'm ever likely to use from every source in one manageable collection. And still leaves me able to find anything I want that I don't have on the 'net.

Re: Only allowed one cook book, which one would it be?

Mark Bittman, How to Cook Everything. He tells you how to do it the easy way, explains why you might want to do it the hard way and counsels you not to be afraid of fat and gluten. Comprehensive set of recipes, although a bit large for some boats. It's pretty much the only book I use these days.

One of Mark Bittman's larger books. He doesn't so much do recipes as ideas for combining ingredients and variations on basic recipes.

Yes to Kindle, Joy of Cooking and at least one cookbook dedicated to your special needs such as native foods/seafood or using canned and packaged foods. I always ask natives what things are and how to prepare them. Makes friends and I learn a lot.
