Live aboard Leasing

We just took into our inventory a 65 foot Burger (1959) and we are considering looking for someone to lease it for a few years. Does anyone have any advice on that? It is located just outside Los Angeles, California.

Find lawyers first.


Leasing a fifty+ year old wood boat could be a nightmare. If the lease doesn't spend a lot of money maintaining it, you'll wind up paying huge salvage and disposal fees, not to mention, the hulk will be worthless.


This is one reason boats are usually not leased, not at all.


Can't see any reason to lease it, except trying to sneak in under the IRS "two years use" versus book valuation of a donation.

As far as I know Burger was making aluminum yachts starting in 1952 together with steel yachts and in the late 1950's or 1960 and then they transitioned to aluminum. I never heard of them making wooden boats yachts after WWII, just some wooden Navy boats

A couple of things that might be critical in south CA. Does the lease include a slip for the boat? Are live-aboards allowed on the boat?

The OP will have to clue us in. Burger's own site says they were building wood and metal until the early 1960's, when they reorganized and moved to aluminum. What th eboat is, how valuable it is, how fragile it is, all will still leave many issues like liability open. Metal boats still sink at the dock pretty much every week, somewhere. Unless someone is taking care of them.

Of course, if the lessee is required to carry full insurance, that could be one less worry. Unless Cali is a vicarious liability state.

There's just not enough question posted to get an answer.
