Thus far eye avoidance has worked, but keep that Gold Bond handy just in case my eyes betray me...

Re: Gun Question, part 2

I have never put anyone on my ignore list, but am going to make an exception to that rule.

Are you sure you want to add Parmenter to your ignore list?
Yup. Done.

Re: Gun Question, part 2

Well threes a charm. Ahh that Gold Bond feels good.

To the OP I am not a drinker, but I feel like buying you one for your
patience. Please accept my IOU.

According to the cop buds I have most people that have had to use a gun, or
other weapon for personal defense still fear civil suits even though they were
cleared of criminal charges. Most just stay quite, and go about their business.
Let sleeping dogs lie I suppose.

I feel sure there have been many instances where having a gun on , or other weapon on
board that was quickly available led to a much better outcome for the intended victim.

Re: Gun Question, part 2

The answer to the OP question is no.
I have owned guns in the past for target shooting and some hunting but not for self defense.
Reading this thread makes me extremely appreciative of the area I sail - Australia. We have just returned from a three month cruise on the east coast great barrier reef. Almost every day someone would approach our boat while at anchor, sometimes to ask if we wanted some fish as they had caught more than they could eat but usually it was to say hello and to ask us over for sun-downers. We also encouraged other people to come aboard for a beer or two. What a great time we had!
I must say I have considered cruising the US but now I'm not so sure. I dont like the idea of sailing in a place where I would need guns to defend myself or scare people away from the boat. Sad.
Cheers

Re: Gun Question, part 2

Hey. This is actually a great thread. Loved reading it.
Common sense has to prevail in both planning a passage and while underway. As I posted earlier I agree with Mark and he has some great ideas. Everyone is an individual and how you react to a situation will be different from everyone else. Just know your limitations and it is better to loose some replaceable assets than to start a confrontation, I believe most of us carry insurance.
Knowing how to avoid an incidence is more important than trying to figure out what to do during one. Someone scared you know what trying to start a confrontation following Robert's rules always ends badly in my opinion.
Discovery channel says Megladon still exists so maybe the 50 cal may be useful if you can hit it in the eye. LOL. No pun intended. Just sort of came to me.

Re: Gun Question, part 2

Personally as a Canadian with many great friends in the USA I think if I lived there I would probably have a hand gun in my home/boat as well. The USA is a violent society and if you took their guns away they would kill each other with knives or sticks. When our best friends moved to Texas we went down to visit them. They were both brandishing handguns which really surprised us but after listening to their stories about friends and neighbors we understood. I am a gun owner and have been pretty much my whole life so I have no issues with owning guns but they are stored in my home.

Never wear a Rolex watch unless you want to be a target or have bodyguards.

Re: Gun Question, part 2

Thread closed.

Before we get blasted for doing this simply because a member chose to derail the thread, you all brought it on yourselves by responding to him. It would have taken hours to clean the thread up and send PMs to every member with a deleted post.

If you think someone is trolling hit the "report" button. Better still put the member on your 'Ignore' list. When you do so, please don't post the name of the member added to your list.

Cheers
