Dry v-berth

I could swear I had a thread about this but my search turned up short.

I've often heard keeping the underside of the mattress in the vberth dry is a major challenge in the tropics. I imagine the best way to fight this is air flow under the cushions. I found something at the hardware store that looked like it might work and wanted to see what people think.

Basically it was sheets of plastic lattice material. So you had 1/8-1/4 inch plastic strips- maybe an inch wide- laid out in a grid with 2 inch holes. A sheet that would cover most of the vberth was about 12 dollars. I was thinking two or three of those stacked would allow for a fair bit of air travel down there...

It wasn't a problem in the tropics, but in cooler climates. In cold weather the water vapour from your body would pass through the matteress hit the cooler plywood under the bunk (cold from nearby cold water) and condense. We used red cedar fence lattice because its overlapping structure gives a better air path - and cedar smells nice and has natural anti-fungal properties; that is why it is used inside saunas
