Diesel bath

Hi all. Just took a bath. Any tips on cleaning my leather boat shoes that are soaked in diesel fuel...socks too!

I'd say lot's of agitation in detergent,- repeat. Getting rid of the smell is always difficult. I've had some success with lemon juice.

For me comet or Ajax is the only thing to remove the smell from my skin, not sure about shoes

Soak the soaks in detergent (rather stronger than normal) and keep washing until they are OK or chuck them out.
Buy new shoes unless you like to always have a reminder of the bath.

if the shoes are really soaked in diesel then best to toss and buy new

I dieselled a pair of sailing gloves and it took multiple washings with Liquid Tide (which is about as good a detergent as you'll find at any price) and days of leaving them in direct sunlight to get the stink out. But I'm also sensitive to diesel stink.

Lots of soaking, washing, to be followed by leather care products to restore the oils that you are going to also suck out of them. Then a couple of days in bright sunlight, or UV and ozone. It may be easier to get new shoes, sad to say.

Just be a little careful with diesel cleaners. I used two or three de-greasers extensively to remove diesel and Sikaflex. I have lost considerable sensation in fingertips. Still an issue a year later. Just stick with simple cleaners I reckon.

Got a good soaking not paying attention filling the big truck. Diesel is almost impossible to remove. Toss them out, and add it to the lessons learned list. Washed in nearly everything under the sun..no luck.

Another good way is the use of dry cleaning fluid. You have to use a wet vac to clean with it.

That's what we used for cleaning carpets in building maintenance. It has an enzyme that eats grease.

I'd just wear them. Smell will wear off in a couple of weeks.
