Crossing the Line

We've just recently crossed a new line and it promotes the idea of successfully cruising without great expense. The "line" is not the equator or prime meridian and not a path to an exotic port-o-call, but a line that became apparent to me while looking at the prices of some beautiful cruising boats marketed in the Northeast Harbor and Southwest Harbor areas of Mount Desert Island, Maine,- 'beautifull "hard candy" boats for big money. By my best accounting Nancie and I have now cruised for a greater number of miles than the purchase price in US dollars for our boat. I know this does not include the refits, new rigging, repowering, sail replaements, etc, but it's still a "line" that I propose as a possibility.

Re: Crossing the Line

That is an interesting way of looking at it and congrats, it actually takes quite a bit of doing.

Re: Crossing the Line

ahahAHAha! that's great.. lets see... 21000 more miles to go here. How far away is new orleans, again?

This is the best argument yet for just buying whatever you can afford and going.. not that most folks in this section need much more convincing, hm?

Re: Crossing the Line

Congrats! I know quite a few people who I doubt will ever cross that particular line because they spent way too much on their boat. Too busy working to pay for it to actually accumulate many miles.

Having run my current boat in charter, at least part time, since I bought her I think I may have crossed the purchase price vs revenue generated line...will have to go back and check the books. In addition to putting lots of miles under the keels.

Re: Crossing the Line

Very interesting take at things!

Here we went thru the price line in the first 18 months of sailing.

Another way to look at the same idea: we have spent LESS on our boat than we would have spent on rent over the same time.

So to say a good deal whichever way we look at it.

Now that's an accomplishment!

And here I was excited to have sailed enough to have earned my first swallow tattoo.

Re: Crossing the Line

That's an interesting way to look at it. We haven't quite reached the "line" yet, but the joy we get from cruising on Amapola can't be measured in the ratio of miles to $$$.
