If you were to be mainly travelling north to south island hoping would it be better/less choppy than just heading across??

It depends on what your goal is. If you want to see the west coast of NA, then others have given good advice. If you just want to get to the US East Coast, then you can also have a great trip, and probably an easier one, by going with the prevailing winds across the Indian Ocean, around the Cape and up the Atlantic.

If you came through Japan, you could catch the current to the Aleutians and on to the rest of Alaska, then turn south for the rest of your trip. You may want to allot more time, just for the amount of adventure in Alaska and Canada alone. I guess it would depend on how big a hurry you are to see the east coast.

That's exactly what we are aiming to achieve by asking the questions. experience is building each day where living on the water.
It seems nobody has posted any first hand experience of an east to west passage through lattitudes less than 40degrees.
In Australia the winds are supposed to be south, south east however we've had weeks of northerlies. does the rest of the pacific work the same or is it just south east and no room for a favourable crossing through the guts???

Cheers

Re: sailing the pacific the wrong way

In Sydney you are south of the SE trades, your in the variables.
Take a look at a pilot chart, that will give you real data on historic wind speeds and direction for a given area, for every month of the year, rather than just someone's opinion.
OpenCPN climatology is free and can help with this too.

Here is the site for the Pilot Charts http://opencpn.org/ocpn/pilotcharts
