Galveston to Mobile Bay - Offshore Day Hops

Does any have any suggestions for day sails from Galveston to Mobile Bay (and back) on a 40' Beneteau. Don't want to use the ICW if I can avoid it. Suggested anchorages along the way would be appreciated. (BTW: have plenty of experience / offshore passages, just too old and lazy to do it that way)

Thanks in advance!!!

Re: Galveston to Mobile Bay - Offshore Day Hops

Hi, from Galveston to Sabine Pass with many places to anchor. Cameron Louisiana is next with a park, fuel, beer and pizza. Fresh Water City is primitive but a safe anchorage. Fourchon is a busy port with lots of oil and gas support. Then Grand Isle is a little less commercial with fuel and groceries easy to get to.

Once you get to the W end of Mississippi Sound its a nice mini cruing ground all the way to Pensacola.

Re: Galveston to Mobile Bay - Offshore Day Hops

We are back in the Lone Star State because we missed our son and Whataburger....

Problem with the Gulf is skinny water, oil rigs, and mucho big ship traffic. Either people go straight across, or do the ditch. I haven't read anything about cruisers doing day hops along the coast. Maybe they do, but don't post about it. We chose the ditch, and enjoyed it. Nice anchorages along the way. I did look at offshore hops, but they just never made sense to me. It's nothing like doing hops on the west and east coasts of Florida.

How ever you get there, enjoy Mississippi Sound. Anchor at Dauphin Island and Ship Island. Never anchored or took a slip on Mobile Bay.
