Re: Starting up a Yacht Charter in Australia

Try getting insurance. The broker will quickly tell you what certs and quals you need.

AMSA can also assist with some requirements. Note that there are only a few hundred commercial ships on the Australian shops tegister.

Re: Starting up a Yacht Charter in Australia

Amsa is still in a transitional stage, and from what I hear the official takeover from the states has been delayed a year or so.

Its worth talking to the old state based marine boards about it since they are still running the show at the moment. http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/imari...al-vessels.asp

MSQ used to have a very easy system to get into survey, but the other states didn't like it. Not sure how things stand now.

A coxswains is incredibly easy to get. The seatime is rediculiously short with a taskbook, something like 21 days. Master 24m NC less so. About a 1 week course with a few other short courses for the level 1 passenger one.

The RYA offshore with a comercial endorsement is good under an exemption until 2018 for yachts to 24 meters. Time will tell what happens to this, but I cant see it being recinded completely.

Re: Starting up a Yacht Charter in Australia

I'm asking myself the same questions. I pay an awful amount of tax each year and am setting up a trust/company structure to alleviate it and a yacht can be made to fit the bill but there are quite a few hurdles. (not interested in property, got smashed a few years ago) I'm also not intersted in borrowing against my home or working for 20 more years to get to my super

AMSA EX18 allows a holder of a Yachtmaster ticket and a list of bits and pieces to operate with crew/passengers to 100nm offshore. This seems a common outcome for most people looking down this particular rabbit hole.

https://www.amsa.gov.au/about-amsa/c...tions/EX18.pdf

There must be some businesses that can use the yacht that don't require passengers, I'm open to ideas. Anything we generate here will benifit the whole community.

Re: Starting up a Yacht Charter in Australia

^^ edit, 7 days Comercial seatime plus taskbook for a coxswains grade 2 (non passgenger) and 30 days Comercial seatime plus taskbook for a grade 1 (passenger). Of course these are limited to 12m and inshore waters.

Re: Starting up a Yacht Charter in Australia

Ha great banter there from the Aussies.

Make sure you know what your getting yourself into, its not as easy as deciding you want to charter the boat.... you will need a Master 5 and a Med 3 ticket to drive a vessel under 24 meters or you then go up to Master 4.

The boat will have as its "survey" from AMSA a crewing requirement.
Be prepared for a lot of hoops and a lot of different requirements not only from AMSA but locally as well...like a "commercial Kitchen requirements" as an example if you are going to serve food.

In my experience forget RYA it will only give you heart ache later, it will always be a band aid solution, they are only recognized in order to give you a restricted to sail Master 5.....not worth the trouble if you are starting from scratch.

I wont bore you here if you are thinking of putting a boat into Survey other than to say I hope your pockets are deep.

fair winds.
