You can buy a high quality tool that will do the same job for almost 1/2 the price.

Get a Winch Bit and a Milwaukee 2704 cordless drill. The drill has 1,200 in/lbs of torque, which is more than enough. Use the included handle or it could take your arm off.

The winchrite will wrench your shoulders, it doesn't have the mass to make it easily controllable. A lot of folks get the winchrite because of how light it is to move around, but when it's in use, it's got a lot of torque and no mass to offset it. Milwaukee 28v cordless gets my vote too. A power winch would even be better, but ouch $$$$.

I've had both the Milwaukee 28v and the Winchrite. Both have pluses and minuses. Milwaukee is powerful, heavy, one speed (all on or all off). You absolutely need to hold the handle or your wrist will suffer (a lot). It does the job, but can be hard to hold on to. The Winchrite is actually a little easier to hold on to, and has plenty of power. It is very easy to use on a two speed winch on the slower speed. As a side note, I since got a good deal on a pair of electric winches. .. That is definitely the best solution for this old man. Prior to the electric winches, I preferred the Winchrite (still use it sometimes to raise the main).

Note that the Milwaukee 18v #2704 has the same torque as the Milwaukee 28v angle drill, but us much lighter, smaller, is variable speed, has a two speed gearbox, and less expensive.

I'll look into that. Must be battery life that makes the difference?

The 2704 is a newer design, based on the 18v Fuel Series batteries. There are several different batteries available in 18v, differing only in amp-hr capacity.
