Self Steering Windvane - South Atlantic 440 S

I just pulled the windvane off of my boat as my long haul cruising days are over. It's South Atlantic 440 S with a wheel adapter. Once you learn to balance your sails, this device works pretty well. We paid $2,228 new

$1,000 plus shipping

Description.
It is a servo-pendulum windvane. It is the most widely proven principle for a windvane. This principle offers a great sensitivity-strength balance.

The windvane is a fast and efficient steering system. The servo-pendulum system consists of a [sensor-vane] which transmits the change in the wind direction to the windvane rudder. This moves laterally on reception of the signal. The rudder is attached to the tiller by [lines] which move the tiller or wheel that steer the sail boat.

Advantages of our Windvane

" Adjustable vane (for strong or light wind)
" Vane fixing in central position
" Adjustable power transmission
" Easy to start and stop operating
" Lift up swinging rudder, + - 170 degrees
" Protection against overloading
" Detachable auxiliary rudder (not included)

You will have to install a couple of blocks, but that's pretty much it. I have an installation manual, and the manufacturer is very responsive to inquiries.

Joe, do you have a picture of your windvane, and can you describe in what shape the parts are? I assume you have used it extensively. Thanks.

Re: Self Steering Windvane - South Atlantic 440 S

The vane is still available. I will take a few pictures this weekend and post them. It's in very good condition. You may want to hit the rudder with some new bottom paint when you install it. Otherwise, these things are pretty bullet proof.

Have a Moody 34 center cockpit. This model is appropriate is it not? Thank you again for responding. How old is the unit?

Re: Self Steering Windvane - South Atlantic 440 S

I purchased the unit in 2014.

When you install you will route control lines from the vane to your wheel or tiller. Distance doesn't much matter if you use low stretch line. Friction does matter so rig properly.
