Re: Is this the problem with the younger generation?

A customer of mine has a charter fishing boat and he was telling me plenty of his customers would rather sit inside in the air conditioning and watch a movie while on the way out to the fishing grounds. Then fish for a few hours and go back inside to watch another movie on the way home! Almost zero interest in being there in the first place he reckons.
Cheers

I am curious to see what career paths they follow since they can't read...
I cant help but ask who is the fault of what you are complaining about.

No complains, just observations.

We have intentionally no TV reception on board, but some movies on HD for easing the cold turkey on motion pictures addiction.

Re: Is this the problem with the younger generation?

Go too any restaurant , mom/dad/2kids /not talking / all on their phones
People passing each other on a quiet street , either one picks up their heads saying
hello or good morning , ( I DO )
Shortly I will be picking up 3 grandkids. join me all the time at our marina here in FL
Still having some control over the 11 & 15 year old boys , The 18 year old girl is more interested in clothes , texting her friends but still joins us all the time
Girl works for our family business weekends
Boys love hanging with me , No problem raking leaves, mowing lawn , working in garage with tools. One of the boys says , Gramps , lets fix the old boat , Something we can do together I have a 21 ft Whaler that needs new transom , He says we can trailer all over fishing that larger boat cant ,
Limited phone use while at marina ,
while at sea , only time generator get turned on is too make coffee ,
No phones only too take pics of fish or each other
If they go into cabin , they can expect me too Yell out , Get your sorry buts out here,
They walk docks talking too other boaters, fisherman , hanging in game room , fishing off dock , Game room / tv room / pool / at times other kids are there , Have bikes on property
Next week Spring break , Boys will be at marina all week , Granddaughter going NY
They wash boat , help in engine room, They know what a wrench is , and working with tools , When we go home I have a lot of work getting boat prepped , they are a big help
I am old school , value equipment , Don't care how much money , Cant put it in the box , cant buy time together making memoirs.
Guess if you don't know any better those kids will have memories of watching big screen TV on that mega yacht with captain

Navies are having recruiting problems. Seems the thought of no FB for weeks whilst at sea is proving to be a major hurdle. Solution, bribe the old guys with a big cheque to stay on a few more years.

Re: Is this the problem with the younger generation?

We like to watch a good TV show or movie at anchor because sometimes we just want to be alone with each other and every night can't be potlucks/happy hours/extreme sports/sailing.

We found when we settle in to cruising things we enjoy in life are added-to and we don't give up those things we enjoyed beforehand even if we can't do them as much as we did before.

Re: Is this the problem with the younger generation?

I upgraded to a Catalina 350 so all the family could come out sailing with me, The grandchildren came aboard went into the cabin saw the TV and wanted to turn it on I said No! Now they don’t want to go out with, something about a grumpy old so and so.
So it’s back to solo sailing, I didn’t tell them the iPad I use as chart plotter has a Foxtel app, so I sit as anchor watching whatever I like

That's the thing about the tropics after you have been there for a while...…..it's same ole same every day

You don't even have seasons to look forward to so why not check out other things

I think this is because they are there to fish. The boat, like a train, jet or Uber car is just transportation.

They want to get the boring transportation part over as quickly as possible.

Careful, you are showing your lack of knowledge/experience again.

Re: Is this the problem with the younger generation?

It,s a fact of life that we are obliged to make our way in a world largely built for us by our parents and previous generations of our ancestors. The important questions are how well will our descendants live in the world bequeathed to them and will they improve it for their descendants?
