Well seeing as you're mentioning "sober" and "Paterson" in the same breath, "The Great Calamity" is one of of the few poems by a poet of some renown that I enjoy -

Tom Clancy is always a fan favorite. A few of his books take a chapter or two before they really catch your attention but overall they are very entertaining. Try to go in chronological order as almost all of his books tie in to the one before. My wife love John Grisham. She has read a number of his.

For under $10, you can get some awesome collections by famous authors. For less than $20, I got (in hardback) Mark Twain's Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, Pudd'n Head Wilson, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, and Dumas' Count of Monte Cristo and Three Musketeers.

I'm really trying to get all the classics completed.

True, but if you ever try reading these books to children, you'll soon discover they are not easy to read aloud. They are written at a very high reading level; probably 12th grade or higher. She certainly found a formula that worked, though--I wish I had a tenth of the money she's made so far.

A recent book I read...Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts is an incredible adventure of a prison escapee From Oz that hides in India which changes his life...true story. It was 936 pages and I could not put it down. They are making a movie from it with Jonny Depp.

I will have to read that one. I love Johnny "Captain Sparrow" Depp so will read the book and by the time I finish the 936 pages they will have finished the movie

Over Xmas I read "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins - a very dry sense of humour and IMO well worth a read (whatever one's viewpoint is - no "revelations" for me).

The Alan Lewrie series by Dewey Lambdin. It's another series about the British Navy in the late 1700's. Very entertaining and interesting history. The hero is somewhat flawed and a reluctant sailor who manages to win out with a combination of personal skill and sheer luck. Written by an American who's actually a long time sailor and owns a sailboat. Of course, there's also the Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O'brien.
