North Africa to Fernando do Noronha to SA - where in between though??

Hi fellow sailors!

We are going to be travelling from Europe next September to the Canaries / Brazil and then South Africa.

Does anyone have any recommendations of blogs for that they would recommend for my research or perhaps personal experience / recommendations for places to go or to avoid! -

Thanks very much in advance

Michelle

Re: North Africa to Fernando do Noronha to SA - where in between though??

if wanting to get south from west africa, jumping off form the cape verdes or gambia i personally would give fernando a miss and try to head as far south as possable on the brazilian coast due to strong sse winds and strong cotary current.

things get easier south of 20 south where the south going current kicks in and the wind is more ese than sse..
continue on till about 40 south, turn left, and hang on you found the "roaring forties",depressions go through in 10 day cycles.

fernando is a national park, has a small harbour and the locals friendly, though not sure if they have immigration there as you are supposed to checkin first on the main land, though short stays are normally tolerated.

Did that a few years ago, would love to ( and probably will one day) go again. Agree with Atoll, if you are heading south then maybe Salvador would be a better option. Locals reckoned on the split being around Recife so Salvador was the place to head for if going south.
Canaries are a great cruising area as well, though most people don't seem to spend long there.
I regret not going up the Gambia, will do that next time. Seeing hippos from the boat sounds great.

Haven't come across many blogs but Annie Hill's "Brazil and beyond" is worth picking up if you come across it.

Enjoy. I find it difficult not to smile when remembering the time spent in Brazil.

Hi Michelle, I'm from Brazil. Fernando de Noronha is a beautiful island with a small harbour to anchor. The island is a national park and has just one harbour that you can anchor. You won't find facilities for your boat but is possible to board fresh water and fuel with your dinghy. It's a terrific place to dive, the best in Brazil.

Salvador has a very good marina. Be careful in Itaparica (an island close to Salvador in Todos os Santos bay) because some time ago friends from Salvador reported piracy activities there. Recife is a huge city. The marina in Salvador is much better than the Cabanga Iate Clube In Recife.

In the south of Brazil you must go to Angra dos Reis and Paraty, close to Rio de Janeiro.

In general terms that's it. Feel free to contact me if you need some help!

Have a Nice trip!
