T.I.P - bought a boat in Mexico

Boat located in Mexico and will be flying down there in 6 weeks.

Right now the boat has a T.I.P from previous owner. I have not yet seen the T.I.P papers myself. But I guess this would be needed if I want to cancel the current TIP?

I have received a copy of the boat certificate (US), but it has expired in late 2016. Can I use this to clear out of Mexico with a written permission from the owner. Or must it be the original (not a copy) of the boat certificate, and does it have to be up to date?

What are the options for me? My plan is to stay 2-3 months in Mexico and then leave with the boat.

the old t i p is no longer any good.
you need to have it cancelled and get your own.
ask the broker who sold you the boat.
he should know how to go about this prodecure.
your ownership papers will need to be in your name and show you as owner of boat.
you cannot clear out of mexico on someone else's documents unless you are a delivery skipper with the appropriate permissions and papers.
yes the documents need to be current.
where in mexico is your boat?

I bought it directly from the the owner. No broker.
I have a written permission from the previous owner to act in behalf of him.

But would it be possible to cancel the current TIP and get my own, without exit Mexico first? I have not my own boat papers, but shall my boat certificate be dated after I apply for my new TIP?

Located in southern mexico

if i knew the town or city i could direct you to an individual or agency to help you.
the boat must exit mexico, documented, and re enter and tip must be cancelled then new original with you as owner. for that you will need ownership papers or legal substitute, and exit papers. it is a circle. an agent may be able to help or the marina in which your new to you boat is kept can help or refer you to the correct individual or group.

Oh...so I must leave Mexico with current original boat certificate in previous owners name. That would mean he needs to update his boat papers?

before doing anything, you should find an agent and follow that agent's instructions to the letter.
i believe but not certain you need aduano.
it is best to request assistance in your area via marina office. they are smarter than this forum.
marina personnel have done this referral in past. trust them .
the procedure is convoluted.

Thanks! I'll get in contact with the marina.

We had some TIP issues. You should hook up with someone who knows the ropes. There are some things that can be done at Mexico's version of a notary republic to cancel an old TIP at the bank. With the old owner around, seems like something could be worked out at the port captain's office so you could get out of town?

best reasons for agents is the diversity of practices in various parts of a supposedly unified nation.
agents are not expensive.
marinas are your best reference for said agents and assistance as they deal with these issues.
"someone who knows" may not know the intricacies as each case is different.

You should have a letter of permission from the PO authorizing you to operate the boat until you get your own registration papers. You want the old TIP if you can get it. I have heard that is is hard to cancel if you don't have it. If you are not returning to Mexico with the boat though it may not be an issue.

Re: T.I.P - bought a boat in Mexico

i have found latt 38 info not quite accurate. he does not know nexico.
i am here. i have called him on iis m8sinformation yet he continues to print it.
as i stated earlier, info from other sources than your locals as i have referred, can become most expensive, as procexure is not as provlaimed for each and every case, as all are different.
the marina in which the boat currently rests onows what to do. this is the best option for original poster.
wot, y'alls fergot i am here in me ico??, or is a desk in wherezitzville more currently informed. much google info for mexico js dated 1996. you might wish to update some.

Are you looking to head S. to clear out of Mexico, & then re-enter with your new paperwork? Or something else. And where specifically in Mexico?

Re: T.I.P - bought a boat in Mexico

I am looking at a boat in Mexico from a private party.

A few more questions about buying:
1. Do they charge sales tax?
2. When you say "leave Mexico" what defines left? How many miles out to sea or must you check into another country?
3. Is sailing down from the Gulf of Cortez to Costa Rica a safe passage along the coast of Mexico? Other than avoiding fishing boats.
4. Is a trip like that, stopping at many places along the way, as interesting as it looks?
Thank you!

mexico has no sales tax. there are legal issues to be considered and permits to purchase but no essential tax. bringing t hings into mexico over 300 usd are taxed duty. no sales tax in mexico.
leave mexico for t i p, i believe is 12 miles out to sea, international waters. must ask your local agent for this info. marina office should also know.
there are guides for this--one is charlies charts mexico, coupled with paper charts and a gps/chartplotter. may want to keep depth sounder functional. do not sail close to islands at night-- the accuracy is a lil off with gps and some islands labelled with lights are only seen from south.
yes it is as beautiful as it both looks and sounds.
t i p is done thru banjercito. you might ask them about this issue for private party without agent. mexican ports have been militarized--capitania of port and down including marina management, supposedly. this began 5 yrs ago.
you can get good info in the marina office where the boat is kept.
