And this why some threads are closed. They get off course because the point of the thread has lost it appeal. Which starts to merge into another thread. http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ere-50754.html

Correction.. not governing the use of the 'High Sea's'... more like stopping/managing/controlling the pollution of the same.... and its not just related to plastic.. thats just one of the problems... as seen in the by products this OP has thrown up its not a singular abuse that blights our vista and threatens sea life.. it also involves chemicals in other forms that is making fish dangerous for consumption, both for wildlife and man... sound pollution which can also affect balance/life...
I'm worried that the day may come when swimming in the sea carries a Health Warning.... everywhere... not just the few places around the world already

Gates does a lot of good things and has done well but Microsoft has been convisted of breaking a number of laws. Not sure he's the best exception.

I think the quote is meant to say that all great fortunes are made by doing something criminal to get there.

Microsoft was convicted after making a vast amount of money.

But I don't think Bill Gates has been convicted of anything, and he was the example I cited.
But there's also Warren Buffett, George Soros, countless movie stars and bands...

I just happen to think it's one of those dumb-arsed, sour grapes inflamatory statements meant to rally the disconted masses...

And I'm not for one moment defending the big end of town because we are being brainwashed and robbed blind by pharmaceutical companies, major food companies etc etc etc... and don't get me started on govt taxes of every shape and size...

I am sure that Bill Gates is a nice guy.

But I am very glad that the Middle East oil is controlled by Arab Dictators / OPEC and not by Bill Gates / Microsoft - would be $100 a pint. for crude. and you'd have to get used to switching yer car off and back on

I believe that paraphrases a line in Honoré de Balzac's Le Père Goriot. The original quotation in French is
"Le secret des grandes fortunes sans cause apparente est un crime
oublié, parce qu' il a été proprement fait."

which means loosely, 'the secret of an unaccounted-for great fortune is a crime
undiscovered because it was executed properly.'

'Not getting caught' does not make it less of a crime. Just ask the fraudsters on Wall St. who knowingly made bad loans, sold loans they knew were bad as 'AAA', then bet against the value of the loans while forclosing on homeowners whether or not they could prove the chain of title. Sure there are exceptions, but very few join the "5% Club" by being kinder and gentler.

Microsoft has been found guilty of crimes and paid billions in fines in several countries.

Don't know about any crimes, but Bill comes from a very wealthy family, so it's not like he started out with nothing. His dad's an attorney and his mom is/was on the board for UW.

That said, he's still probably the smartest guy around. I've never met him, so I can't speak to his character, but he's sure doing a lot of good work with the fortune he made.
