Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

Re: Flag Etiquette Question

I'm still here.

I love the GB ensign. I wonder as to its provenience, never seen one in the flesh

I'm trying to think up a reason for that ensign , was the PO a anti - unionist. Of something. Maybe it was just an error at the " printers "

Any way Royal Proclimations had this appended

"Wherefore We will and straitly command all Our Subjects forthwith to be conformable and obedient to this Our Order, as they will answer the contrary at their perils."

So , he's got his coming !!

Conformable and obedient? Oh, oh! Thank goodness I am not one of her Majesty's subjects, as I would be in sooooooooo much trouble .

I've never seen a GB ensign in the flesh either. Interestingly, the guests had friends aboard the yacht flying the Union Jack. I'd never seen a yacht flying the Union Jack either. Were both owners perhaps flying flags of convenience using skippers who didn't know the difference?

It is actually a complicated issue. The queen is the sovereign of Australia. Despite being an Aussie, I am not one of her subjects (at least as far as I understand).

Does that legal mind think otherwise?

Let me see what I can find.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm....................................

As far as I understand Australia is federal constitutional parliamentary monarchy and the Sovereign is Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God Queen of Australia.

I think it make Australians a Queen's subjects, however as a Queen of Australia, not as a Queen of United Kingdom...

Cheers

This explanation may help:

"On 1 January 1983, upon the coming into force of the British Nationality Act 1981, every citizen of the United Kingdom and colonies became either a British citizen, British Dependent Territories citizen or British Overseas citizen.

Use of the term British subject was discontinued for all persons who fell into these categories, or who had a national citizenship of any other Commonwealth country. The category of British subjects now includes only those people formerly known as British subjects without citizenship and people born in Ireland before 1949. In statutes passed before 1 January 1983, however, references to British subjects are interpreted as if they referred to Commonwealth citizens.

British citizens are not British subjects under the 1981 Act. The only circumstance where a person may be both a British subject and British citizen simultaneously is a case where a British subject connected with Ireland (s. 31 of the 1981 Act) acquires British citizenship by naturalisation or registration. In this case only, British subject status is not lost upon acquiring British citizenship. The status of British subject cannot now be transmitted by descent, and will become extinct with the passing of all existing British subjects.

British subjects, other than by those who obtained their status by virtue of a connection to Ireland prior to 1949, automatically lose their British subject status on acquiring any other nationality, including British citizenship, under section 35 of the British Nationality Act 1981."

Still it does not contradict my understanding that:

  1. Australian citizen is not a British citizen
  2. Australian citizen is not a British Monarchy subject
  3. Australian citizen is a subject of Monarchy of Australia
  4. Australian citizen is a subject of Elisabeth the Second, Queen of Australia
and some old Royal Ordnances regarding the flags may still be applicable to this small Union Flag in the corner of Australian National Flag

No legal background here, but I think your understanding is incorrect .

As I understand it, our head of state is the British monarch, but we are not her subjects. I do not owe allegiance to the queen. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

This is the pledge new citizens make. There is no mention of the Queen:

"From this time forward
I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people,
whose democratic beliefs I share,
whose rights and liberties I respect, and
whose laws I will uphold and obey."

(Sorry for the thread drift everyone)

Re: Flag Etiquette Question

Perhaps the charter guests were French; hence the French flag. It's not correct, of course, but we see charter boats doing it often enough.

The charter guests were Italian I think. Italian could be heard clearly over the water and there was an Italian flag flying where it should be below the lower port spreader (and a Greek courtesy flag was where it should be below the starboard spreader).

Maybe one of the owners is French and old rivalries die hard .

The skipper came in flying the French flag alone at the stern. The GB ensign was only unfurled at anchor. As Carsten said, dozens of lashes are due .
