Display of Coast Guard Documentation number

The Coast Guard Certificate of Documentation for our new-to-us boat finally arrived. We are confused about where the official number (not the state's registration number) should be displayed. The documentation packet included information about the size and style of lettering and mentions the number should be displayed "on some clearly visible interior structural part of the hull." We're confused about what that means.

Who else has their vessel documented with the Coast Guard and where did you display the COD number? We're looking for some examples.

Thanks.

John

Display of Coast Guard Documentation number

We put our Coast Guard Documentation number in the engine room.

You can put it in any location inside the boat that is the appropriate size for the lettering and it must be hard to remove without leaving some sort of damage.

Re: Display of Coast Guard Documentation number

When we bought our boat, the numbers were painted onto the hull inside the hanging locker.

Re: Display of Coast Guard Documentation number

Mine are painted on the hull in the lazarette with a couple of layers of gelcoat over them. My previous boat had them routed into a piece of teak that was screwed to a bulkhead. What they want is for it to be impossible to remove them without leaving evidence that is what you did. They want to be able to identify the hull even if it is sunk. There is no requirement to also put the numbers on the outside of the boat. The name of the boat, the hailing port and the national flag are the ID you need on the outside.

Re: Display of Coast Guard Documentation number

I never had my boat documented because I couldn't figure out what "interior" meant.

Skylark's documentation number is painted on the inside of the hull under the starboard lazarette. The numbers probably should be quite large, at least 4" high, the same size as the home port name on the transom.

Re: Display of Coast Guard Documentation number

Mine were routed 2 inch letters in teak, glued and screwed to engine room bulkhead. Fine print: you are required to have a duplicate set of hull and documentation numbers inscribed in a second 'hidden' location. Mine were in magic marker on the side of the drawer in the head.

Re: Display of Coast Guard Documentation number

I used vinyl letters of the appropriate size placed inside a locker and covered with a layer of fiberglass and epoxy.

Mine are glassed into the hull under a hatch at the bottom of the companionway.

Re: Display of Coast Guard Documentation number

Ours is (1) in the lazarette (2) in a locker in the boward berth (3) on the hull in the engine room. I've always wondered if they kept forgetting where they put it and then put it in a new place each time they were boarded by USCG and couldn't find it.

Re: Display of Coast Guard Documentation number

I've read glued and screwed and painted, I doubt either comply. It is only for your protection. A main member of the boat and a router or someone said chiseled in.

Thank you everyone. I now have a good idea of where to put it. Appreciate it.
