Re: Coast Guard Detains Uncooperative Boater After Chase On SF Bay

Ah, CBS. Another sad remnant of a once-fine Nooze organization.

They say the CG asked to board, and was denied. In which case the CG are in a lot of trouble. Unless they demanded to board, or stated they were boarding, which would be a whole other kettle of fish.

I guess no one at CBS ever played "Mother May I?" as a kid.

Then there's the question of a foreign national from a dangerous allied nation, and the boat's tax, title, and registration status....Not to mention, whether there were any fresh donuts being held hostage on board. So many questions, and so little time left over after trying to keep up with all the celebrity rehab news.

Well, in Lat38 there is a completely different description of this incident and if they are right, I am glad they will spank his butt.

Wow, can't believe CBS didn't include the sensationalism in their report.

This could be very bad for him, the vessel used while committing a crime can be seized.

I hope they throw the book at him, if Lat38 is correct, he gets his kicks from doing this stuff.

Kudos to Lat38, that's a whole different scenario, and way more believeable. Coupla federal fines for false maydays, unlicensed use of a radio by a foreigner, assaulting a federal officer, fleeing from the boarding...Maybe they'll settle for fifty grand if he leaves US waters under his own power, because he's going to be expelled from the US and declared persona non grata real fast with all those charges. Or maybe they'll ask for a hundred, seize the boat, and ship him home in economy class.

I've always thought the appropriate penalty for a false distress call should be taking someone clear out to sea, dropping them off in an inner tube float, and telling them to have a nice day.

Crazy that the two news reports are so different. I wonder if he was one of the usual liveaboards in Richardson Bay.

"recognized his voice" sounds a little iffy if you ask me, good luck proving that one,
gotta have some motive, I don't see any, but I understand how accusations work
when you run out of laws to apply.
Threatening about a gun, there is something, fleeing and not allowing boarding,
no question at all.

It seems he might be from NZ, must have come to the USA to escape the nanny police, oops, just discovered the USA is just as bad if not worse...

I think he is pretty fortunate he did not pull this stunt in say, Mexico. Either way, he is an idiot and its probably best to get him off the seas!

Well, it is possible as well that the whole story about fake mayday was invented by CG to justify. But if it was not and indeed the guy is guilty, it will be no problem proving that. There should be a recording of all transmissions, and having this recorded, it will be easy to prove thet it was the guy's voice (if it was him). Anyway, we will probably have more news and info about this soon

The general media knows next to nothing about boating and boating regulations, while Latitude 38 would have known what questions to ask and what the answers really meant.

I don't trust any general media reports about anything happening on the water. I assume they have made mistakes both in knowing what questions to ask and in interpreting the answers.

I gather you haven't read much about the recent Zimmerman trial in Florida.
Nobody could prove which of only two people was on a voice recording.

The coast guard will have recordings, and probably a direction-finding vector. I truly doubt that they would make up the false mayday story. I've heard too many false maydays in the San Francisco area, and if this is truly a perpetrator I hope they throw the book at him.

I wish it was as easy to find whoever had an open mic all Sunday afternoon.... drove me nuts. There needs to be some kind of homing missile for these guys.. shouldn't be that hard to engineer, surely?

Is that an evil government paranoid view or are people really out to get you?
