I remember that Sen. Kerry had this big stink from the press not because he did anything illegal by registering his boat in RI while having his official residence in MA but because it looked "unseemly" for a wealthy politician to be using what the uninitiated public and bombastic press deemed to be "loopholes" in tax laws. He was 100% within his rights as long as the boat was kept in RI and sailed in MA for less than the statutory period which would trigger the need for MA registration and sales taxes. BTW RI does not tax its boats although otherwise it is even worse and bluer than MA when it comes to taxes in general. I guess the folks in Newport and Jamestown still have some clout left there.

Making the uproar more ridiculous is the fact he would have been breaking the law in Rhode Island had he not registered it there.
