Try going down the Singapore straights or even the Panama Canal before a statement like this please !

Why Would you have your AIS alarms on when going down the Panama Canal or any other place that is so busy and your keeping a constant watch?

An AIS is not for the vessels you can see and are aware of, other than to know who they and direction etc, an AIS value is in alerting you to the vessels you don't know about.

If an alarm is going off all the time, reduce the alarm parameters or turn the alarm off

Class B AIS has an effective range of 5-10nm this is visable by the naked eye normally !
So why have it ... Busy waterways

Re: AIS now compulsory for foreign yachts in Thailand

Because when you have a lot of vessels in sight, obscuring one another, at different speeds etc, AIS can filter them much more accurately and faster than a helmsman can. I've had over 200 vessels on my AIS at 5nm or less off Singapore. It can be like being a tortoise on a motorway...

Ill out up front that I don't have any experience of 'heavy' traffic

But, I really struggle to understand what use an ais would be with 200 moving vessels all moving in a 5nm dia, let alone less. How on earth for that matter would you 'see' the indicators on the screen unless your ais is on a 56inch display I would have imagined your head in circumstances like that needs be up looking out at all times, not head down in an ais screen.

And 'The Panama Canal', isn't it like, a Canal? Can you not see ships of concern in a canal? I've not been there myself some have no idea.

Another example of how AIS was totally useless when your yacht gets rammed at anchorage, AIS on, anchor ball up, by a local, presumably WITHOUT AIS as it's NOT required for the locals!

Fortunately nobody was hurt.

I suspect this is more about the government having tools to locate foreign yachts and selling electronics to foreigners. Follow the Money.

The collision is really a big question. Broad daylight, they were previously acknowledged, not in a sea-way. Kind of a puzzle. Looks like the rusty barge was planning to come close & sell fish or something?

Gee, over a year later

I don't know how useful AIS would have been in that situation anyway. But thanks for the hint on the video. I love subscribing to videos like that so I'm of to 'follow the boat' on patreon.

Re: AIS now compulsory for foreign yachts in Thailand

I am currently in Thailand. Had some experiences related to the new AIS laws.

We had heard that the compulsory AIS transponder requirement in Phuket waters was now actually being checked with a scanner on arrival. Since we didn’t have one we decided that we would go straight to a marina and drive to immigration, hoping that this would avoid proving we were legally equipped.

At immigration at Chalong Bay we were asked for our MMSI number, and we happen to have one as our VHF radio has a AIS receiver only function but we hadn’t thought to bring it.

Read about this on my blog:

And telling the world you are breaking the law in Thailand! This forum has had frequent information advising of the new requirements. You don't seriously think they will not not see you don't have a transponder?

All foreign yachts in Phuket ‘will have to have AIS system’

The AIS systems on boats will be monitored from the Vessel Traffic Management Centre on Chalong Pier.
The regulation is being introduced after the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) commanded the Third Naval Area Command to organise boats and ships along the Andaman Coast and around islands offshore, from Ranong down to Satun.

The new regulation was announced in a Provincial Announcement signed by Governor Maitri Inthusut and released today (September 4) to the media.

“Phuket province is the center of maritime tourism on the Andaman coast,” the announcement stated. “There are numerous boats from foreign counties travelling for tourism around Phuket and neighbouring islands, which causes heavy water traffic congestion. Therefore the organisation of boats in the area needs to be enforced.

“[The systems must be installed] to follow the order of the NCPO and to accord with the installed Vessel Traffic and Management System (VTMS) of Phuket [on Chalong Pier] to control the security of water transportation, to prevent maritime accidents and to secure the waters’ stability to the utmost effectiveness and benefit.”

The announcement specifies that cruise boats, motor yachts and sailing yachts must install AIS Class B systems or higher, and the system must be turned on at all times.

Violations of the regulation, it warned, “will result in punishment according to the highest law.”

Phuripat Teerakulpisit, director of the Phuket Marine Office, said, “The cost of an AIS is about B20,000-30,000 depending on the specifications.

“Places where people can buy an AIS [in Phuket] will be announced after our next meeting on Wednesday [September 10],” he added. On that day, he said, he will also explain in detail how the regulation will be applied and to which boats.

AIS systems are used worldwide not only to control boats but also for collision avoidance, fishing fleet monitoring, traffic management, security, search and rescue, and accident investigation.

The technology has been compulsory worldwide since 2002 for all ferries and vessels over 300 tons, and the European Union is currently looking at making it compulsory for other vessels over a certain size.
