Wood Type for Interior Hull

here are a few interior pictures of our 1984 Camper-Nicholson. All interior bulkheads and free standing wood & cabinets is Mahogany veneer plywood with solid mahogany trim. The floors are teak & holly pin-stripes. The hull interior is 1" wide thin teak strips glued to leveling frame stand-offs. Headliner is plywood on leveling stringers & upholstered with a fake leather-like stuff. Heads are all white Formica paneling (washable).

The teak strips is easy to do and takes only moderate ability & tools. (nav station photo) Ours is all glued on but we have many areas where I have pried it off, numbered the backs and installed with suitable dressy screws. There is also no reason you couldn't use a less expensive material. Strips/battens are 1 inch wide X 3/16 thick. It runs behind all cabinets & book cases. Great for running wires.

I did the entire interior of Boracay in epoxy coated Ecoply.

The big advantages were cost, ease of working, durability, safety and availability. It's available from the local megahardware store, works easily with handyman tools (which it does not blunt), it's relativly safe (unlike some hardwoods which have a toxic dust), and has stood up to six or so years of pretty well constant use.

I did some hardwood trim and the table is now marine rated hardwood ply.

If I was to do it again I would go with 3/4" (19mm) marine rated hardwood rather than the Ecoply for the sole (Don't ask...).

If you can find a good source for maple, white oak, birch consider them as replacements for the teak strips. White oak is easily bent and is strong.

I saw a 42 ft Colvin in BC last year with a Western Red Cedar Interior that was owner done ! It was super great looking ! Just a thought.

Your photo confirms why I like Doug Fir. I think it applies equally to his ceiling project. It wouldn't have to be clear either. I don't want any of my projects to look like production boats. Too glitzy.

you guys don't worry about termites, obviously. I know of three boats here with the interiors completely destroyed in the past two years. Formosan Termites. Eat every wood on the list.

Hah! Sounds like the owners should have worried more! I had one small spot under the floor on a trawler in Fl that had been eaten away by something. They were long gone though.

Please forgive a little thread drift. I just got back from my favorite lumber yard where I picked up a piece of 5/4 X 12 mahogany to make a seat for the little boat I'm building. Poking around in back I found some slabs of local wood in all kinds of interesting shapes. It looked to me as if some one had a portable saw mill and was raiding trash piles for interesting wood. What surprised me was the Royal Palm. The wood was beautiful and much harder than I expected.

I saw a nice big log of Cuban Mahogany on my way home. I'm thinking I need a saw mill now.

Years ago I installed Ash on my 26' southcoast interior. I had a furniture manufacturer mill 2 inch wide 1/4 inch thick strips.

It turned out terrific
