I have an Acapulco 40 that has a tiller. Looking to install a wheel system. I would be receptive to installing used equipment if I could find any. Seems with all of the hurricanes to hit the east coast of the US over the last few years there would be some used gear for sale from totaled boats.

Have not had good luck finding any. Does anyone know of websites or companies that specialize in this?

Need to ask around the yards in a given region.

Few dealers have their inventory online.

It's the other way. After a hurricane has hit there are no spare parts to be had. The damaged boats scarf them all up.

Many states are legislating scrap yards out of existence. And many boatyards are also under economic pressure to cash out valuable land.

If you have specific items which you need in my exlerience Craigslist in a heavily boating area is often the best place to look. I bought there hard top at 10% of price new, heavy duty winch at 20% new price, sails for $50-200 which lasted me 3-5 seasons and counting, roller furlers for $100-200, brand new bottom paint for $25/gal, etc, etc.

Also check out the charity marine donated gear sales at the Maine Boat Builders show held in March in Portland, Maine. Lots of goodies there at yard sale prices, especially on the last day. Once got 2 CNG tanks there for $5 each. They're about $250-300 each new but they are accepted for exchange regardless. Yipeee!

Bacon marine in Annapolis is probably the largest used gear chandlery that you’ll find. They routinely have a few helm pedestal assemblies laying around. Prices can be steep however.

Most people go the other way, yanking wheel steering in favor of a tiller. Removes a tremendous amount of complexity and of course gives you that great helm feel. But to each their own!

Look to the sky, if you can see more then 2 sailboat masts in the air, one of them is selling surplus parts. I've found that 90% of the ports I've entered always have one or two consignment stores, some are real diamonds in the rough.

I've always been able to make repairs and improvements not matter where I was.

Ebay? Also there is a big used boat gear place just north of Fort Pierce too. Cant remember the name. It's hard to sell used steering systems when you have one, and hard to buy when you want one. Make a lowball offer if you find one.
