Propane Solenoid Question

I have a new Solenoid for my propane system. To my surprise it has 3 wires... seems like 2 would be normal?? (cant remember havent installed one in years.) The very small print literature included in the box doesnt show a wiring diagram... is mostly liability verbiage etc... How do I wire this thing? I guess I can just wire up 2 wires and keep trying at random....

Interesting, What brand is it? Could one wire be for an indicator light? Just a thought.

Good Luck

Try to get to the original manual or just connet it and see what the 'free' cable does.

May be control light, may be to rig in the gas-alarm auto-off, etc.

It's most likely a grounding wire. I couldn't see what model number you have so I selected a common valve to look at.

Go to the asco site with your model number and look up the installation manual for yours to make sure.

According to the Asco FAQ:
ASCO Valve - FAQ Product Questions
Q: How do you wire a Red-Hat II Valve (3 wire coil)?
A: All ASCO AC/DC coils are suitable for continuous duty except where otherwise noted and are single phase.
  1. RedHat II coils have 3 wires - 2 wires of the same color (i.e., red or yellow) and 1 wire green with a yellow stripe which is an external ground wire. Since ASCO coils are not polarity sensitive, connect the 2 wires of the same color to the positive and negative power supply, the green/yellow stripe wire to ground.
  2. For three-phase systems, the 2 wires of the same color can be connected to any of the three phases.
