Packing Glands - To Drip or Not to Drip

Thanks to the Forum and all the excellent contributors and content.

I am interested in opinions regarding longevity and performance of drip less or traditional packing glands for long distance cruising. I have enjoyed many years of trouble free performance with a PYI Shaft Seal sailing the Chesapeake Bay. Some slip mates have cautioned me about going offshore with a drip less method compared to a traditional packing gland.

Thanks for your thoughts on the matter.

So your PYI fails.......big deal, stuff a rag around the shaft and carry on......it's no different than if the hose on the traditional gland fails.

Re: Packing Glands - To Drip or Not to Drip

For some reason that I don't know, IP recommends against dripless.
Probably ignorance, but mine still drips. I so far have resisted spending the money to fix something that to me isn't broken, but I too have heard others recommend against long distance cruising with a dripless, I assume this has to do with difficulty to repair, not so easy to jury rig as the old fashioned packing gland is?
